Lab NaCl CaCl2 CuCl2

Element: a pure substance made of one kind of atom Compound: 2 or more elements that combine to make something new Mixture: 2 or more substances that are not chemically combined Solution: a mixture of 2 or more substances that are equally dispersed Solute: the substance that is dissolved

Solvent: the substance that does the dissolving Concentration: the amount of a substance in a given amount in a solution or mixture Solubility: the ability of one substance to dissolve another Suspension: a mixture in which the particles are dispersed evenly but can settle to the bottom Colloid: a mixture in which the particles are dispersed evenly but are too small to settle

ELEMENTS COMPOUNDS MIXTURES Made of only one atom. Made of only one molecule. Made up of more than one molecule. Cannot be broken down – by physical or chemical changes Can be broken by chemical changes Can be broken down by physical changes Has the same properties throughout Has different properties throughout

Try This With your partner next to you, decide which of the following pictures is an element, a compound, or a mixture. (You will use one choice more than once)
