1 Classifying Matter

2 Scientists classify matter based on the make-up of the atoms and how they are arranged

3 Pure Substances Pure substances are split into two categories.
Elements Compounds

4 Pure Substances Elements
Pure substances; the particles through out the substance are identical. They can not be broken down or separated into different substances

5 Pure Substances There are 118 elements. These elements make everything. How many words can you write with the 26 letters of the alphabet? How many things do you think you could make with 118 letters?

6 Pure Substance : Elements
ATOMS: The smallest particle in an element. CHEMICAL SYMBOLS: A letter or letters that represent an element. (Ex: Li = Lithium, O = Oxygen).

7 Pure Substance: Compounds
Pure substances that are made of more than one element. Two or more different elements chemically combined. They can only be broken down chemically.

8 Pure Substance: Compounds
MOLECULES: The smallest part of a compound. Made up of two or more of the same or different elements chemically bonded (2 Hydrogen & 1 Oxygen or 2 Fluorine).

9 Mixtures MIXTURES Two or more substances mixed together but are not chemically combined.

10 Mixtures PROPERTIES OF MIXTURES:
Physical properties of each substance stay the same. Substances can be present in any amount. Substances can be separated by physical means.

11 TYPES OF MIXTURES There are two types of mixtures:
Heterogeneous Mixtures Homogenous Mixtures

12 TYPES OF MIXTURES HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES: “Not the same throughout”
The different particles can sometimes be seen. The different particles can be separated physically. SUSPENSION: mixture where particles settle out

13 TYPES OF MIXTURES HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURES:
“Well mixed”, looks like only one substance.

14 HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURES COLLOID: SOLUTION:
A homogeneous mixtures where the particles are suspended in each other. (milk, toothpaste,) Not dissolved. SOLUTION: A Homogeneous mixture when one substance is DISSOLVED in the other.
