1 11/3/15 warm up Please copy and complete:
Chemistry is the study of matter. Matter has mass divided by volume. Matter is either an element, compound, or a mixture.

2 11/4/15 Please copy and complete:
Copper is an element. Copper Chloride is a compound. Copper and Copper Chloride are substances. Copper chloride dissolved in water is a mixture.

3 Objective: Students must be able to distinguish between substances and mixtures.

4

5 Defining types of matter
Elements – substances made of only one kind of atom Compounds – substances made of two or more elements chemically combined in definite ratios Mixtures – any ratio of substances, not chemically combined.

6 Student Objective: Identify symbol for an element when given the name of the element for the, “Top 40 Elements.”

7

8 Objective: Students must be able to distinguish between substances and mixtures.

9 Chemical Compound – a chemical combination of elements.
Student objective: To observe and record combining elements into a compound.

10 How do you make a compound?
Formation of common table salt sodium plus chlorine - YouTube Theo Gray's Mad Science – YouTube 2.Formation of water (Phil Morrison video) 3. OMG MgO

11 Last word on compounds “A compound is a substance that is made of two of more simpler substances and can be broken down into those simpler substances.” ( Elements cannot…) Example : The decomposition of water; also called the electrolysis of water. (Phil Morrison video)

12 11/18/15 Describe a Solution Three examples of solutions are sugar water, windshield wiper fluid, tap water. Three properties of solutions are they are clear, they do not separate, and they cannot be filtered. This is because the particles in a solution are too small…

13 When sugar dissolves in water, sugar is the solute, and water is the solvent.
Sugar is said to be soluble in water. However, sand is said to be insoluble.

14 When sugar dissolves in water, sugar is the solute, and water is the solvent.
Sugar is said to be soluble in water. However, sand is said to be insoluble.

15 11/20/15 If solutions are clear, un-filterable, and
do NOT separate on standing, Then suspensions are Cloudy, filterable, settle out

16 Solutions are homogenous mixtures.
Clear, un-filterable, does NOT separate on standing. They are evenly mixed.

17 Suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures
Cloudy, filterable, settle out. They are unevenly mixed.
