Mrs. Chadwell – English III The Pilgrims Arrive Mrs. Chadwell – English III

Before the pilgrims Native Americans lived on the land. Columbus opened the door to North America. Spanish interests were high. Sparked interest all over Europe

The “first” pilgrims French fleeing religious persecution arrived in St. Augustine, Florida 50 years before the Mayflower.

The mayflower The pilgrims left Plymouth, England in 1620. There were 44 pilgrims. In 65 days, 43 arrived off Cape Cod.

The first winter During the first winter, about half of the Pilgrims died from illness and starvation.

Spring and Learning New beginnings came when Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to plant. Samoset and Squanto The first harvest was a time of thanksgiving.

New country, new power New laws and ideologies William Bradford Mayflower Compact Separatists – Pilgrims - Puritans

Who were the Puritans? 50 pilgrims separated from the Church of England Mayflower Plymouth Colony Congregationalists In 1620, fifty Pilgrims who had separated from the Church of England arrived in what is now present day Massachusetts along with fifty-two entrepreneurs. Traveled by a ship, the Mayflower. Created Mayflower Compact- document of self-governance. Established the Plymouth Colony after Mayflower Compact was created. 1629, John Winthrop and his Puritan followers left England on the Arbella and established the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Congregationalists believed in self-government

Puritan Beliefs Human beings are inherently evil and so must struggle to overcome their sinful nature. Personal salvation depends solely on the grace of God, not on individual effort. The Bible is the supreme authority on earth. In Adam’s fall we all sinned and therefore are evil. No matter how much repentance, God’s grace is all that will save you. Predestination. Political law had no jurisdiction on Puritans, The Bible was their law. Church and State unified until the end of the seventeenth century. Petitioned James I for religious reform, denied so migrated

Puritanism Values Honored hard work and sacrifice But honored material objects. Valued family life Quakers and other dissenters punished, usually by execution Wealth was the reward of a virtuous life

Misogynistic Attitudes Women wanted certain kinds of knowledge that led them to the devil You are what your neighbors say about you.
