2. I. Religious Freedom A. Unlike Jamestown the next wave of settlers wanted religious freedom from the Anglican Church of England. B. They were separatist that called themselves Pilgrims. C. Their journey led them to Plymouth only 35 of the 102 passengers were Pilgrims. D. They sailed in Sept. 1620 and landed in Dec. 1620 E. Half of the Pilgrims died from malnutrition, disease and cold. 3. II. New Settlements A. More Puritans settled in Massachusetts Bay under the leadership of John Winthrop, there were 900 people in 1630. B. Soon more than 15,000 Puritans settled in the Bay. This became known as the Great Migration. C. Thomas Hooker didn’t like the way Winthrop and the colony worked. He in1636 led some pilgrims to start Connecticut.
