What is Hate Crime? In pairs or groups, write a sentence that defines the term “hate crime”. Swap papers. Now, looking at the other definitions, how much have you agreed on? In your group, brainstorm some of the groups in society who may be the victims of hate crime. We are going to look at disability hate crime: “Any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a person’s disability or perceived disability.”

Introduction by Mel In the introduction to the video, Mel tells us that disability hate crime is a hidden crime. What do you think she means by that? Can you think of reasons why people do not report this type of crime? Now watch the whole sketch.

Everyday incidents… Kieran sets out to take part in Airdrie’s Got Talent. He takes the bus into town with his friend, Mel to buy a new shirt. Can you give examples of the times that Kieran is discriminated against because he has a learning disability? Why don’t the bystanders help out?

What would you do? As soon as the incident happens on the bus, people around Kieran and Mel take out phones and film the incident. What do you think about this? Would you do anything differently? Why/why not?

Language Kieran and Mel get called a lot of offensive names in the film. Think about the way you and your friends use language to describe other people. Do you ever use any of these terms to describe either people with disabilities or other people you have contact with? Have you ever called your friends names like this? What do you think now having seen the sketch?

The Message “Just have a heart and help someone when they are isolated” Kieran says this to the passengers on the bus. It may not always be possible to intervene personally but you can report the crime via the crime stoppers website, or in person to a police officer.

Airdrie’s Got talent! Look at the way each participant in the competition is treated. Do you see examples of discrimination? What do you feel about this?

Finally… When the sketch was performed live ,the audience were given the chance to take the place of members of the cast in the scene on the bus, and to show what, if anything, they would do differently. What would you have done? How can you take forward what you have learned from this work?
