2. Why are we going through this presentation?
Several teachers at Beulah HS have reported instances of: -homophobic terms -derogatory terms against the intellectually disabled -behaviors and attitudes that take away from the learning environment While everyone is entitled to their own opinion and Freedom of Speech per the 1st Amendment, all school-aged students are guaranteed the right to an education free from discrimination under federal law.

3. So in a nutshell…don’t use the “I have Freedom of Speech” argument
You have the right to use derogatory language and share personal beliefs…until you enter this building…then the rules change a little bit.
You have the right to free speech…but you are not free from consequences of said free speech when it violates someone else’s right to a harassment-free education
You have the right to free speech…but you are not free from the consequences of public opinion
You will not be prosecuted by the government for exercising your right to free speech…but if you violate LCBOE policies on harassment and bullying, you will be subject to disciplinary measures

5. Think about how you answered…
How would you feel if people you looked up to saw how you answered?
How would you feel if you found out your best friend identified as LGBT and you used the term “gay” to describe something you don’t like?
How would you feel if someone with an intellectual disability overheard you using the term “retarded?”
Is it really that difficult to use an appropriate word?
Why do people continue to describe things or situations as “gay” or “retarded” knowing that those terms are antiquated, inappropriate, and hurtful?

6. So let’s talk about it…
If you are not convinced that it is wrong to call something you dislike “gay” or “retarded” then please explain
If you are convinced that it is wrong to call something you dislike “gay” or “retarded” are you willing to ask someone else to maybe “please do not use that word” or “pick another term?” Why or why not?
Are you afraid to stop the use of these terms for fear of being made fun of?
Have you ever been told you were being “too sensitive” for using those terms?

7. Make a conscious effort…
To use appropriate language in appropriate situations
To be mindful of others
To be aware of your own beliefs and values
To be aware of context and intent (were they trying to hurt my feelings or are they just ignorant of what they are saying?)
To know your audience and exercise caution
To treat others how you would want to be treated if you were in their shoes
To treat others how you would want to be treated because it is the kind thing to do

8. Going forward…
Language meant to hurt or disparage individuals that identify as LGBT will not be allowed
Language meant to hurt or disparage individuals with intellectual disabilities will not be allowed
Disciplinary action can take place if you choose to use language that takes away from the educational environment

9. Final Thought…
Words may seem harmless on the surface…but over time they can create an environment that is hostile to individuals that identify as LGBT and/or individuals with intellectual disability.
***Clarification this speaker is not saying other slurs are better or acceptable…but rather he is asking why do we tolerate some slurs and speak out against others?

10. If problems continue…
Speak up! Tell your classmates (respectfully) that you are not OK with that type of language
