History of Christianity

Jesus of Nazareth was a Jew who was born in a small town in the Roman Empire. Around the age of 30, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and had a vision in which he received the blessing of God.

After his baptism, Jesus began preaching, teaching, healing, and miracle-working. He spoke of the "kingdom of God," and interpreted the Mosaic law (laws of Moses) in new ways. He had 12 disciples, men who followed him, believed he was the long-awaited Messiah

Crucifixion Some people were against Jesus Jesus was eventually executed by crucifixion by the Romans.

Resurrection Three days later, women who went to his tomb (were he was buried) and it was empty. An angel told them Jesus had risen from the dead.

Paul Followers of Jesus and his teachings are called "Christians." Christians believe Jesus sacrificed himself for them and is the messiah. Paul, a Jew, persecuted Christians for years. Paul converted (became a Christian) after having a vision of the risen Jesus.

Paul Paul went on numerous (many) journeys (trips) throughout the Roman Empire, traveling on the many roads. He started churches and wrote letters back to them after he left. Many of these letters become part of the New Testament in the Bible

For hundreds of years Christians were persecuted.

In the 4th century CE the Roman Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYhMQNPa8mM&list=PL2B7233B6FE9075EC&index=26

The Christian religion became legal Persecution ceased (ended) Thousands of people converted to the emperor's faith.
