Why should I come to student health? You can’t take care of patients if you don’t take care of yourself first! During school we tend to neglect our bodies and forget about our physical and mental health We care about you!
Who can use student health services? All students affiliated with The University of Texas Health Science Center Medical services are available to spouses and dependents

Clinicians Our physicians are board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics We also have a full time psychologist and part time psychiatrist available Registered dietician
Services offered – Acute illness URI’s, Sore Throats Urinary Tract Infections Abdominal Pain Vomiting -Fever -Trauma -Lacerations -Abscess -Rash

Insurance Mandated for all students We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield Academic Health Plan (available through Auxiliary Enterprises) or other private insurance Your dependent can be seen through their insurance If you have an HMO please list one of our SHS doctors as PCP if you intend to use our clinic as your Primary Care
Student health fees Covers nursing or low complexity visits (conjunctivitis-pink eye), no additional cost; insurance not applied One Well Women exam/year One Physical Exam/year
Example of low complexity visits Single problem i.e. – sore throat, cough, pain when urinating Considered low complexity by physician Covered under student fee’s so you will not receive a bill
Moderate complexity and higher Multiple problems Sore throat and abdominal pain More complex MD decision making Abdominal pain requiring physician to do multisystem exam, order several test, etc. Chest pain requiring an EKG Your insurance is billed and you will be required to pay your co pay Co Pay is waived if you have Blue Cross Blue Shield Academic Health Plan
After hours Call answering service at 713-500-5173 when clinic is closed and on weekends and ask for Student Health on call doctor or psychiatrist 24 hours/day
Emergencies If you ever have a non life threatening emergency or you are not sure what to do please call us If after hours please call Student Health Physician on call You may receive a bill for ER visits depending on your insurance carrier
Needlestick/Occupational Exposures 713-500-OUCH Make sure you have a sticker on your badge with the pager number Operates 24/7 Details of incident collected and risk assessed by nurses Baseline labs on you (at clinic) and the source patient (work with hospital)
Confidentiality Medical records are electronic and extra security measures are placed on notes to protect student’s privacy. They are not part of an academic record. They are not shared with school without your permission
Final thoughts… Eat well balanced diet! Don’t skip meals! Exercise on a regular basis! Don’t neglect your health while you are in school! Take time out for yourself! We are here if you need us!
