It can help summarize current health status and transition students into assuming personal responsibility for their health care.

5 Independence and Confidentiality Issues Students under 18 years old require parental consent form on file in HS; CSL may differ Students over 18 years old may give medical consent for treatment and are encouraged to discuss their medical decisions with you The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) addresses the security and privacy of health data

6 Immunizations Illinois Register Department of Public Health Title 77 Immunization Code 695 requires Tetanus Diphtheria –TD within the past 10 years is required –TDaP now available as a booster vaccine Measles Mumps Rubella –A series of 2 is required if born after 1956 SIUE recommends all students consider Meningitis (1 shot) Hepatitis A (series of 2 shots) Hepatitis B (series of 3 shots)

7 Services Offered Included in Student Health Fees Medical Care –Physician visits (scheduled) Acute care treatment Initial diagnosis –Nurse visits Triage Education Mental Health Care –Counseling visits (scheduled) Acute care treatment Intake and individual sessions Psychiatric consultation Health Education –Group programs –Community Outreach Offered at Discounted Fees Women’s Health Visits –Routine or problem Immunizations and Injections –Required &/or recommended –Allergy shots with Internist’s oversight Laboratory Testing – HS or outside MD Pharmacy Supplies –HS or outside MD

8 Health Insurance If your student has your Insurance –Make sure they know the type of coverage –Carry current insurance card An option is Academic Health Plan –Brochures are available in Health Service office –Recommend obtaining insurance if not covered by parent’s plan –www.academichealthplans.com/siue/

9 Medical Emergency Care During Office Hours (8am – 4:30 pm) –Health Service – walk in –Counseling Services – call Emergency Department –Anderson Hospital –Gateway Regional Hospital –Hospital of the student’s choosing Call 911 –Police Dispatch and First Responders –Call Staff
