Genitive Case Endings – 1st, 2nd, 3rd Declensions; noun stem 1st declension 2nd declension (m. & n.) 3rd declension S. –ae S. –ī S. -is Pl. – ārum Pl. –ōrum Pl. –um The genitive SINGULAR endings determine FER SURE the declension of the noun! Memorize them!! NOUN STEM: by REMOVING the genitive singular ending from the noun, you will have the noun’s “stem” from which you may decline it. DICTIONARY FORM: the form of the noun displayed in your Latin dictionary: mercator, mercatoris (m.) - merchant

USES OF THE GENITIVE CASE: GENITIVE OF POSSESSION E.G. pecunia mercatoris erat in tablinō E.G. omnēs Galliae est divisa in trēs partēs.

PRACTICE: DECLINING NOUNS DETERMINE THE DECLENSION OF EACH NOUN, WRITE IT DOWN. DECLINE EACH NOUN IN ITS PROPER DECLENSION. 1. animus, animī (m.) – mind 2. ara, arae (f.) – altar 3. lītus, lītoris (n.) – shore Nom. Gen. Dat. Acc. Abl. Voc.
