The Role of the Catholic Church Target: Explain the importance of the Catholic Church as a political and spiritual institution. Success Criteria:  I can define the term CLERGY and the roles associated with it.  I can explain what a RELIGIOUS ORDER is and how they attempted to spread Christianity throughout Europe.

Purpose of the Medieval Catholic Church Bell Work – 10/10/17 Discuss with your shoulder partner. Do not record.  1. What was the role of the Medieval Catholic Church? There is more than one answer. A. To teach that Heaven and Hell existed  B. To teach the only way to heaven was if the Catholic Church let them C. To dominate the life of every person, especially charging its members taxes D. To gain as much wealth and land as possible—far wealthier than any king.  E. To punish those (excommunicate) if those disagreed with church practices

Purpose of the Medieval Church.... Answer: ALL OF THE ABOVE!!! The church was the center of everyone's lives. People lived in fear if they could not pay taxes (called tithes) to the Church— especially peasants who worked church lands. They believed they were going to hell. The Church was the richest institution of its time. Churches charged money for Baptisms, Marriages, And burials. Failure of payment meant an afterlife in Hell. Those not buried on holy land also went to Hell. **This is one of the reasons why Kings wanted the power to appoint Bishops/Archbishops--to get a hold of Church $$$$ and its land holdings.
