Reading The class will have a weekly reading test every Friday. Tests cover vocabulary, the weekly story, various reading skills covered that week, and have a “cold reading” for the student to complete. Students are expected to read 20 minutes every night. There will be a weekly reading journal. Students are to complete each journal using at least three complete sentences. Students participate in the Accelerated Reader program. Each quarter students take a STAR reading test to assess an appropriate level and goal for the quarter. Students meeting their quarterly goals receive an award determined by the school media specialist. This school year students will be introduced to novel study.

English Students will be tested on spelling every Thursday. The spelling words are given at the beginning of every reading unit. English grammar covers sentences, subjects, predicates, nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, and prepositions. Students will end the school year diagramming sentences. Each grammar unit has a mid-unit test and final whole unit test. The English workbook is an excellent resource for studying. Students will be actively engaged in all stages of the writing process. All writing will be done in the classroom. Portfolios with the students' final drafts of work will come home at the end of the school year. All students are expected to complete all writing and assignments in cursive unless otherwise directed by the teacher.
