Over to you…coaching at work What is your definition of coaching? What do you think coaching can offer? What makes for a great coach? Who do you think might benefit most from coaching and why?

Coaching defined “Developing a person’s skills and knowledge, so that their job performance improves, leading to the achievement of organisational, personal and team objectives. It targets high performance and improvement at work and focuses on specific skills and goals”. (CIPD). “Coaching is the art of facilitating the performance, learning and development of another”. (UK School of Coaching).

Macmillan coaching in action “My service is undergoing fundamental change and I am developing a team to deliver outreach information and support. This will include engaging with people who need hospice care, enabling them to be involved in decisions about their care and providing people with the skills to self-manage their condition with confidence. I want to use the coaching to help me manage the team and deliver a successful project. My objectives for the coaching are about team leadership, service development and managing change.” Macmillan Information Manager with two years’ in post.

Macmillan coachee testimonial “The sessions I had with my coach were hugely valuable and an incredible opportunity to learn more and understand about myself in my working life; and what I can do to be more effective, empowered and better in my role. It was both challenging, and insightful, and the gift of having that much time 1:1 to reflect, explore, and be supported is amazing. I would recommend my coach to anyone. In 20 years of my career I’ve never felt so listened to, supported and encouraged; I have a renewed vigour for my work and a much clearer sense of direction and purpose. Potentially life - changing stuff!”.

Macmillan coachee testimonial “The coaching was available to me when I had stepped up into a band 7 job in a different area, with a new line manager, during a time of organisational change and personal challenges. Having a space where I could talk freely and honestly about how all of these changes were impacting on me and my ability to fulfil my professional role was extremely helpful. My coach was very flexible and responsive to my needs at different points, which helped a lot and kept me going through fluctuations in how I felt about my effectiveness and resilience. I also took ownership of my development needs, because the coaching validated the need to do so”.

Macmillan coachee testimonial “The opportunity to sit with someone independent of Macmillan and my employer 2 hours each month allowed me to off-load and seek support to deal with difficult challenges at work and to find a way to work through and identify solutions. The coaching enabled me to evaluate the progress that I had made and to develop an action plan to manage my workload going forward. The coaching was invaluable, supporting my development and identifying where I needed further training and support”.

Macmillan coachee testimonial “My coach was excellent - warm and open, engaging and professional, and allowed me time and space to discuss work-related issues while supporting and challenging me in equal measure to find solutions together. She related my topics to the underpinning psychological evidence and taught me a great deal about people and relationships. I was able to assess areas of my work where I could make improvements and influence outcomes - and also importantly where I could not. I finished my coaching sessions knowing I had new strategies and knowledge to continue doing the best I can for my patients, while not causing myself undue stress or anxiety”. Thoracic Cancer CNS
