MCEACHERN’S 9th Grade Advisement Welcome to... MCEACHERN’S 9th Grade Advisement Welcome to McEachern’s ninth grade advisement.

9th GRADE ADVISEMENT You should have received: Pink registration form 4 year plan Course offerings book PSAT results and PSAT test booklet How to read the PSAT score sheet handout Upon check-in you received a folder of information which contains the following: your child’s transcript, a copy of the Explore Test results, if your child was present in October to take the test, and a booklet entitled “High School Advisement/Career Planning Guide”. This booklet contains helpful information for you and your child to review. Throughout this video an overview of the requirements for each subject area and each diploma type will be explained. Advisement will involve choosing a diploma path, and , finally generating a four-year plan for your student. When this video is done, you will be sent to the art room where you will meet with a representative of each of the subject areas.

American Lit/Comp (11th Grade) ENGLISH 4 Units Required Units: 9th Grade Lit/Comp American Lit/Comp (11th Grade) Both the Technology/Career and College Preparatory student must earn four units of English.

MATH 4 UNITS Math 1* Math 2* Math 3* Math 4* *Math Support available Accelerated Math 1 Accelerated Math 2 Accelerated Math 3 AP Calc or Discrete Math In the math subject area, a Tech/Career student must have three units of math and out of those three units they must take algebra I or it’s equivalent. The equivalent to Algebra I is Algebra I: Part I A & B AND Algebra I: Part II A & B or two years of Integrated Math I: A & B and Integrated math II: A & B. A College Prep student must have four units of math and out of these four units they must take Algebra I, or its equivalent, Geometry, and Algebra 2. If your child is planning on attending one of Georgia’s four research universities: Georgia Tech; University of Georgia; Georgia State; or Medical College of Georgia, a math course above Algebra II is required. For other college admission requirements, please visit their web sites. AP Statistics may be taken concurrently with another math course after either Math 2 or Accelerated Math 2 or as a fourth math

SCIENCE 4 UNITS Choices for 4th Year Course: Anatomy and Physiology Biology Physics Chemistry or Environmental Science Choices for 4th Year Course: Anatomy and Physiology Earth Systems Environmental Science Zoology Forensic Science (Prerequisite: Chemistry) Both the Tech/Career and College Prep student must have three units of science: a Physical Science, Biology, and a science of their choice. If your student is taking Honors Biology as a 9th grader, they will Honors Chemistry then Physics.

SOCIAL STUDIES 3 UNITS 1 Unit World History 1 Unit U.S. History ½ Unit American Government ½ Unit Principles of Economics To meet the Social Studies requirements, the Technology/Career student must have three units of social studies. One of these units must be a World Studies course, which would be either World Geography or World History, the second unit will be United States History and the third unit must be American Government and Economics. The College Prep student must have three units of Social Studies including World History, United States History, and American Government and Economics.

MODERN LANGUAGES Not Required for Graduation Most colleges, however, require 2 years of the same foreign language. 3 years completes pathway requirement. McEachern offers the following languages: Spanish German French There is no requirement for Foreign Language for the Tech/Career student. The College Prep student must have two units. These two units must be two consecutive years of the same language.

HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION 1 Unit Required ½ Unit Health ½ Unit Personal Fitness (Becoming Physically Educated) The Health/Physical Education requirement for the Tech/Career and College Prep diplomas are the same. Students must take Health and Personal Fitness which is commonly called B.P.E. or Becoming Physically Educated. This course is offered their Junior and Senior year. All other P.E. courses are counted as local electives

3 UNITS FOR PATHWAY Career Technology Small Business Development Business and Computer Science Career Technology Graphic Design Therapeutic-Medical Services Law and Justice Architectural Drawing and Design Transportation Logistical Support (Auto Tech) Engineering Career Carpentry Career Cosmetology Career JROTC Navy Career Small Business Development Interactive Media Marketing Career Computing Career Required elective!! Both the Tech/Career and College Prep student must take one unit. This course may be in the area of Fine Arts, Tech/Career which includes Trade and Industry, Business, Family and Consumer Science and ROTC, OR they may an extra year of a Foreign Language. Family and Consumer Sciences Interior Design Culinary Arts Consumer Services Teaching as a Profession Modern Language Fine Arts

ELECTIVES 4 UNITS Electives are made up of courses in the following areas: Band Orchestra Chorus Art Career Tech Business Consumer Sciences PE Academic Electives Finally, the Tech/Career student must have three local electives and the College Prep student must have four local electives. Local electives are the additional non-core classes that the student takes that are left over after they have met the prior elective requirements.

23 units are required for graduation Total Course Credits 23 units are required for graduation 32 units are possible on McEachern’s schedule Both the Tech/Career and College Prep student must have a total of “22” units in order to graduate.

HONORS COURSES Honors courses are taught at a faster pace and cover material in greater depth than regular level classes. Honors courses, except for most 9th grade courses, carry an extra .5 quality point. (They do not count in the HOPE core GPA) Honors level courses best prepare students for Advanced Placement Courses as well as the rigor of college courses

ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES AP provides students with the opportunity to try college work while in high school. AP gives students the opportunity to learn valuable skills and study habits AP is designed by college professors and secondary school teachers. College professors also help score exams to verify mastery of college material in AP courses
