Medford Lakes School District Teacher of the Year Program 2012 PRESS to START

This Teacher of the Year program is the result of a cooperative effort between several teachers and the superintendent. It is a privilege to honor outstanding teachers within our district who have demonstrated, through professional and personal means, exemplary devotion to educating the children of Medford Lakes and contributing to the betterment of the teaching profession within our district. Nomination Process A nomination can be made by a fellow teacher or staff member, parent, or community member. The person making the nomination must complete a Nomination Form and submit it to Mrs. Cooper ). Nomination Form The Nomination Form can be found on the district web site at Nomination for Teacher of the Year is considered a high honor and nominees must meet eligibility criteria. Nomination Process Next To be considered for a Teacher of the Year nomination, teacher must have achieved tenured status prior to the nomination period and has NOT received Teacher of the Year in the past five years. The person nominating a teacher should be able to establish in writing that the teacher meets at least three of the eligibility criteria listed on the next slide. RETURN TO HOME

Demonstrates strong ability to foster excellence in education as evidenced by ongoing contributions to the improvement of student learning and the learning environment; Possesses strong content area expertise and is able to deliver content in a meaningful and engaging manner that is age appropriate; Incorporates innovative instructional materials, curriculum or strategies, such as interdisciplinary instruction, project- based learning, research-based programs, or technology to support and enhance instruction; Eligibility Criteria (Three criteria are needed for a nomination ) Source: Next RETURN TO HOME

Utilizes research techniques in the classroom to improve the teaching and learning process; Engages parents/families as partners in the learning process to enhance student achievement; Demonstrates a strong commitment to creating a climate of caring and respect conducive to effective teaching and learning; and Demonstrates poise, eloquence and the ability to maintain a demanding schedule. District Teacher of the Year Committee Next A committee will be formed annually for the purpose of administering the nomination, evaluation, and selection process and shall consist of the following nine positions: two administrators one Board of Education member one executive member of the MLEA one executive member of the MLEF one executive member of the ML HSA two past Teacher of the Year recipients one parent one representative from the MLEA Teacher of the Year Committee (non voting member) to advise only

District Teacher of the Year Committee Next Once all nomination forms have been submitted, the committee will begin initial review necessary to prepare a list of candidates. If any district administrator or member of the committee wishes to reject a nomination for just cause, such argument will be made to the committee. Decision to reject any nomination shall be made by the committee. The district superintendent approves the final candidate list. RETURN TO HOME

Candidate Evaluation Next Once a candidate list has been finalized, each candidate will be notified ( Invitation to Accept Nomination letter) and invited to accept their nomination. Candidates accepting nomination will complete a comprehensive questionnaire (NJ Department of Education) The committee may also elect to utilize the following tools during the evaluation and selection process: letters of recommendation, work samples, face-to-face interviews. Candidate Evaluation Next Selection of Teachers of the Year will be based upon a comprehensive rubric designed specifically for the purpose of selecting the candidates that possess the greatest display of eligible criteria. An open ballot will NOT be used for voting for Teachers of the Year. RETURN TO HOME

Candidate Selection and Recognition Next The district recognizes that the Teacher of the Year is a coveted honor that those in the teaching profession hold in high regard. Promotion of the Teacher of the Year program through actions and events that recognize and celebrate this honor will generate enthusiasm as well as a positive spirit among the teachers and entire school community. Formal announcement of Teachers of the Year for both Nokomis and Neeta Schools will also honor the candidates that were nominated. RETURN TO HOME

Candidate Selection and Recognition Next Those selected as Teacher of the Year representing Neeta and Nokomis Schools, will be honored at a school board meeting, receive an engraved plaque and certificate, and have their names engraved on a Teacher of the Year plaque displayed in their school. Other accolades will be considered with help from other district committees or associations (i.e., social committee, MLEA, ML H&SA, MLEF, etc.) RETURN TO HOME

Timeline –Current School Year Next Nov. 13 th – Nov. 21 st : Nomination Period Nov. 21 st – Nov. 28 th : Finalization of Candidate list by Committee, Invitation to Accept Nomination letters, Questionnaire distributed to Candidates Dec. 11 th – Candidates paperwork due to Superintendents office. Dec. 12 th : Committee evaluation, selection, and announcement of Teachers of the Year and Candidate List Jan. 14 th : Submission of District Teacher of the Year application packet to County. Feb. 7 th : District Teacher of the Year selected and Superintendent completes District Teacher of the Year online form. March 7 th : District Teacher of the Year submits application packet to County Office of Education. RETURN TO HOME
