Year 11 History 2011

Whats it all about??? NCEA- National Certificate of Educational Achievement 24 Credits available – we will be doing 20 credits this year 12 internal (at school) and 8 external (in the November exams)

Internal Credits These are given for work done during the year. During this year you will be offered 12 internal credits. This means you will have to produce three pieces of work for your teacher to mark. Each piece of work (called assignments or assessments) is worth 4 credits.

Grading Your work is given one of four grades: Not Achieved – you get no credits for this Achieved – 4 credits Merit – 4 credits Excellence – 4 credits

Endorsements If you get a lot of credits over the year with Excellence or Merit you will get an endorsement certificate from NCEA and a badge from the principal !

Ooops! If you make a boo-boo and get Not Achieved you may be given the chance to fix it up. If you make a tiny stuff-up which means you did not quite get the next grade up, you may be given the chance to fix it up.

Moderation All of your assignments will be marked at school and double-checked by other teachers this is called moderation. The school will keep all of your work for a year. Some of it will be sent to Wellington for checking – more moderation.

How long will I have to complete my assessments? You will be given class-time and you are expected to do some work at home. If you have time-management issues you must discuss this with your teacher before the due date.

Topics This year we are going to study three topics: Black Death and the Peasants Revolt and the 1918 Flu Epidemic Tudors and Stuarts The French Revolution

But it all seems so complicated... It will seem a little complicated at first. Your teacher understands what is required so dont worry too much.

The Standards In year 11 history there are six standards. This is too much. So, at our school we will be doing five standards. Three during the year and two in November. This means that the history exam in November will only be two hours for you.

Here are the standards... AS Carry out an investigation of an historical event, or place, of significance to New Zealanders (internal) AS Demonstrate understanding of an historical event, or place, of significance to New Zealanders (internal) AS Demonstrate understanding of different perspectives of people in an historical event of significance to New Zealanders (internal) AS Describe the causes and consequences of an historical event (external) AS Describe how a significant historical event affected New Zealand society (external) (note that the standard AS Interpret sources of an historical event of significance to New Zealanders – is not there)

Confusion You will be confused by the numbers and big words. Dont worry. You will have a copy of these in the front of your exercise book.

How does it all work? Your teachers have read the standards and knitted them together with the topics. This means that if you work hard on the internal assessments they will help you to pass the external assessments

A plus?... In NCEA history you can often answer the external (November) exams on just one topic you have studied.

Your first assessment – term 1 AS Carry out an investigation of an historical event, or place, of significance to New Zealanders (internal) AS Demonstrate understanding of an historical event, or place, of significance to New Zealanders (internal) You will be given these two assessments to do together. That is why you get quite a long time to do them. Your teacher will show you some examples of what is required.

1.1 Carry out an investigation of an historical event, or place, of significance to New Zealanders 1.2 Demonstrate understanding of an historical event, or place, of significance to New Zealanders (internal) So how does the Black Death fit with the part of the standard that says of significance to New Zealanders? The Black Death and its consequences will give you background for the first internal assessments (1.1 & 1.2) which will be about the 1918 Flu Epidemic that killed more people than WW1.

As luck would have it.... If you work well on these internals (1.2 &1.2) you should have enough information to also do: AS Demonstrate understanding of different perspectives of people in an historical event of significance to New Zealanders (internal-at school) AS Describe the causes and consequences of an historical event (external-November) AND/OR AS Describe how a significant historical event affected New Zealand society (external - November)

Hard work in term one will definitely pay off...

What about Tudors and Stuarts? This term two topic also fits with two different standards: AS Demonstrate understanding of different perspectives of people in an historical event of significance to New Zealanders (internal) AS Describe the causes and consequences of an historical event (external)

And The French Revolution... AS Demonstrate understanding of different perspectives of people in an historical event of significance to New Zealanders (internal) AS Describe the causes and consequences of an historical event (external)

Connections... In the Tudors and Stuarts and French Revolution topics there are definite areas of significance to new Zealanders

School exams in September During the practice exams you will attempt the external standards 1.5 & 1.6 and also do the 1.4 internal This is worth credits remember! We will also practice these before you sit the school exams.

Any Questions????
