Environmental Issues Pesticides, fertilizers, human waste, storm runoff, mining and manufacturing byproducts all contribute to water pollution. Millions of Africans are hospitalized every year because of unclean drinking water. Few places in Africa have plumbing for water or sanitations to purify drinking water.

It’s getting hot in here! The Sahara Desert in north Africa continues to grow due to desertification. The three reasons for desertification are: Overgrazing Poor agricultural practices Slash and Burn

Savanna- Rolling grasslands with scattered trees and shrubs. Most people live along the coast or the Nile River. Rainforest- Lush plant life and wide variety of animals.

They are in countries from the equator to southern Africa. Approximately 400 African languages have Bantu roots. Swahili- All Muslims living in a narrow strip from Kenya to Tanzania. Education in Africa Kenyans value education, with about 85% attending school. In rural Kenya, only about half the children attend school. Money is scarce. If parents have to decide who gets to attend school, the male will go. In Sudan, education has suffered because of civil war.

Apartheid South Africa was colonized by the British and Dutch in the 17th century. In 1948, apartheid separated the country into white and non-whites. In May 1961, the South Africans voted for and gained their independence from Britain. It took many protests and powerful leaders for this to occur. This leads us into our next person….

Nelson Mandela A leader in the nationalistic African National Congress (ANC) who was arrested in 1962. He was sentenced to life in prison in 1964 for treason and sabotage. He emerged as the international symbol of resistance to apartheid, and the world community demanded his release. President de Klerk ended the ban on the ANC and released some political prisoners, including Mandela.
