Matrimony and Holy Orders by Stephen, David, Aidan, and Charlie

Matrimony: Page 194 Matrimony is a Sacrament at the Service of Communion. The Sacraments of Holy Orders and Matrimony are the Sacraments at the Service of Communion. In Matrimony, a baptized man and woman enter a lifelong commitment to as faithful, loving partners. They also promise to accept children. Men and Women share the same human dignity, and God gives them both a part in continuing the human family. Ever since the beginning of time, God called men and women to commit in life-long relationships and love for each other. The covenant that a husband and wife make is modeled on Christ’s love for the Church. The church is sometimes called “Bride of Christ”. Christ’s love for the church is permanent and unconditional, and a married couples love should be permanent and unconditional. The married couple becomes one in service for others. When one does service, so does the other. The married couple is the fruits in each other’s lives. Faith Word: Charity- love The married couple’s expression for love includes procreation of new life as well as raising their children with moral and spiritual education.

Page 194: The Rite of Marriage The Rite of Marriage usually takes place within a Mass. There are three important questions a priest or deacon asks the married couple during the mass. They are: Are they free to give themselves in marriage. Will they love and honor each other for the rest of their lives. Will they lovingly accept children from God and raise them in the faith. Fidelity: faithfulness Then, the vows are exchanged and the deacon or priest asks God to strengthen their union. The rings are blessed, and are shared as a sign of love and fidelity. After all of this, the Liturgy of the Eucharist is followed and a nuptial blessing takes place.

Matrimony: Page 195 In Matrimony, couples receive grace for lifelong live and service. Jesus said “What God has joined together no human being must separate” In Holy Matrimony a bride and a groom confer the sacrament on each other Jesus acts through them and in their vow to always love each other. Jesus’ love is made present through the love of the newly married couple Jesus remains with the couple through their lives Jesus shares his love with them Couples should frequently celebrate the sacraments of Eucharist and penance They are strengthened to serve God and the church

Holy Orders: Page 196 Jesus called his Apostles to continue his work. Jesus taught his disciples that they should share in God’s love and spread God’s Kingdom. Jesus shared his ministry with the Apostles in a special way. “He showed them ways to bring God’s love to all people.” After Jesus’ resurrection, Jesus sent them out to all nations to continue his work. Jesus said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” After he said this he breathed on them and said “Receive the Holy Spirit.” By doing this Jesus sent his Apostles to continue his work. Wherever they went, Apostles gathered Christians together into the modern day equivalent of a diocese. They chose leaders and ministers for this community. These leaders were the modern day equivalent of a bishop. The people who worked with the bishops were called presbyters, or priests and deacons. The bishops in the community had the authority to name new priests. This was done by laying on hands and with a special Prayer to the Holy Spirit. “The church does this today in the Sacrament of Holy Orders. ‘Those who receive Holy Orders are consecrated in Christ’s name ‘to feed the Church by the word and grace of God.’’” (CCC 1535) The Church’s leadership can be traced back to the Apostles and Christ himself!

When the candidates are preparing the bishop during his homily will talk about the job that he will be acquiring. The bishop lays his hands over his head and in silence he blesses him.
