What is it?

3. Sacrament of Marriage is one of two sacraments of vocation; the other is Holy Orders
Vocation comes from the word Vocare which means to hear.
God calls us to be married, single, or to religious life.

4. Jesus performed his first miracle at the Wedding at Cana, but marriage has been around for longer than that.

5. Marriage began as contract between two families, an agreement that included specific duties of the husband and wife that would affect not only the couple, but their extended families as well.
Religion had nothing to do with marriage. Equality was not a concern.

8. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the third century and the rise of Christianity, the Bishops began to make rules for those who wanted to marry. The church decreed that for a marriage to be valid, it must be preformed in the presence of a priest who would act as witness.

10. In 1439 at the Council of Florence, marriage was finally recognized as one of the seven sacraments of the church. It was explained as a ―tangible sign of the union of Christ and the Church.‖

11. The primary importance of the sacrament of marriage is the love between husband and wife, which reflects God‘s love.
The sacrament involves inviting God into the relationship, to support, strengthen and protect the bonds of Holy Matrimony.

12. Today, the Catechism of the Catholic Church stresses that the same God who created humanity out of love also calls the people of God to lovingly respond and demonstrate their love for each other. Marriage is one example of the way that love can become an image of the ―absolute and unfailing love‖ that God has for his people. (CCC 1604).

This form is similar to the Rite of Marriage between a Catholic and non-Catholic, without the celebration of the Eucharist but with an exception. This form is not a sacrament. It is, however, recognized and blessed by the church.
