Presentation transcript:

COORDINATE PLANE DEFINITION: THE AREA FORMED BY THE INTERSECTION OF TWO NUMBER LINES EXAMPLE:

X-AXIS DEFINITION: THE HORIZONTAL NUMBER LINE IN THE COORDINATE PLANE. (GOES LEFT TO RIGHT)

Y-AXIS DEFINTION: THE VERTICAL NUMBER LINE IN THE COORDINATE PLANE. (GOES UP AND DOWN)

ORIGIN DEFINITION: THE POINT WHERE THE X AND Y AXES INTERSECT

COORDINATE PLANE X AND Y AXES THE POSITIVE X-AXIS IS TO THE RIGHT OF THE ORIGIN. THE NEGATIVE X-AXIS IS TO THE LEFT OF THE ORIGIN. THE POSITIVE Y-AXIS IS ABOVE THE ORIGIN. THE NEGATIVE Y-AXIS IS BELOW THE ORIGIN.

ORDERED PAIRS DEFINITION: THE POINTS FOUND IN THE COORDINATE PLANE SYMBOL: ( X, Y ) X IS THE FIRST NUMBER AND Y IS THE SECOND NUMBER IN THE ORDERED PAIR. AN ORDERED PAIR IS NAMED BY A LETTER OF THE ALPHABET AND SHOWN BY A DOT ON THE GRAPH.

QUADRANTS DEFINITION: THE FOUR AREAS FORMED BY THE INTERSECTION OF THE X-AXIS AND Y-AXIS IN THE COORDINATE PLANE.

QUADRANTS DEFINITION: QUADRANTS ARE NAMED COUNTER-CLOCKWISE, QUADRANTS I, II, III, AND IV II I III IV

QUADRANT I THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE +X-AXIS AND THE + Y-AXIS THEREFORE ORDERED PAIRS FOUND IN THIS AREA HAVE BOTH X AND Y POSITIVE VALUES. EXAMPLE: (3, 7)

QUADRANT II THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE – X-AXIS AND + Y-AXIS, THEREFORE THE ORDERED PAIRS IN THIS AREA HAVE –X AND + Y VALUES. EXAMPLE: (-3, 4)

QUADRANT III THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE –X-AXIS AND THE – Y-AXIS, THEREFORE THE ORDERED PAIRS IN THIS AREA HAVE –X AND –Y VALUES. EXAMPLE: (-5,-3)

QUADRANT IV THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE +X -AXIS AND THE – Y-AXIS, THEREFORE THE ORDERED PAIRS IN THIS AREA HAVE +X AND – Y VALUES. EXAMPLE: (4,-2)

HOW TO GRAPH AN ORDERED PAIR: START AT THE ORIGIN THE X-COORDINATE TELLS YOU HOW MANY UNITS TO MOVE TO THE RIGHT(POSITIVE) OR LEFT(NEGATIVE) THE Y-COORDINATE TELLS YOU HOW MANY UNITS TO MOVE UP (POSITIVE) OR DOWN (NEGATIVE) FROM THE END OF THE X-COORDINATE. USE A DOT TO SHOW THE LOCATION OF THE ORDERED PAIR ON THE GRAPH

EXAMPLES: GRAPH AND TELL WHERE THE FOLLOWING ORDERED PAIRS LIE? (2,3) (-4,5) (-5,-6) (6,-4) (0,0) (0,4) (5,0) (0,-6) (-3, 0) (4,6)
