1 Chapter 2: Lesson 2: The Coordinate Plane
Graph points on a coordinate plane. Objective:

2 A coordinate plane is formed when two number lines intersect
A coordinate plane is formed when two number lines intersect. The number lines separate the coordinate plane into four regions called quadrant. An ordered pair of numbers, such as (3, -2), used to locate a point in the coordinate plane. X-coordinate corresponds to a number on the X- axis. Y-coordinate corresponds to a number on the Y-axis. The origin is where the two lines intersect at point (0,0).

3 When locating an ordered pair, moving right and up on a coordinate plane is in the positive direction. Moving left and down is in the negative direction. To Graph an ordered pair: ( X, Y ) Example: ( 5, -4 ) Steps: ( , ) 1. Start at the origin. 2. Move left or right on the X-axis to find the X-coordinate. 3. Then move up or down to find the Y-coordinate.
