Progress to date Toolkit development District level vulnerability assessments 17 May 2016 Draft municipal Climate Change Response Plans

Agriculture

Priority Indicators: Agriculture Theme Indicator Title Agriculture Change in grain (maize, wheat & barley) production Increased risks to livestock (cattle and pigs) Loss of Grasslands

Responses: Agriculture Sub-Project: Change in grain (maize, wheat & barley) production Research & improve understanding of CC impacts on grain production Research and improve understanding of grain production Conduct research on alternative agricultural production that can be implemented Promote knowledge generation, knowledge sharing, stakeholder participation and awareness-raising grain production Implement evidence based monitoring initiatives that feed into management systems Identify climate resilient land-uses that will support the agricultural industry’s efforts to exploit new agricultural opportunities, new areas and new crops thus reducing climate change impacts on current agricultural potential

Responses: Agriculture Sub-Project: Increased risks to livestock (cattle and pigs) Commission research and improve understanding of CC impacts livestock Generate and share scientific, social and indigenous knowledge Promote knowledge generation, sharing & stakeholder participation Strengthen management plans, to enable continuous monitoring of water and herbage availability for livestock Develop a framework that will assist farmers with adjusting to reduced rainfall Educate farmers on the advantages associated with early detection of diseases in animals

Responses: Agriculture Sub-Project: Loss of Grasslands Research and improve understanding of CC impacts on biodiversity Research and improve understanding of ecosystems services Promote knowledge generation, sharing & stakeholder participation Strengthen management plans of grasslands Implement evidence based monitoring initiatives Incorporate biodiversity management into planning systems for other sectors

Human Health

Priority Indicators: Human Health Theme Indicator Title Human Health Increased Occupational Health Problems

Responses: Human Health Sub-Project: Increased Occupational health problems Conduct CC impact assessment on occupational health Identify and profile groups that are most vulnerable to heat stress and dehydration Conduct awareness campaigns on the health risks of high temperatures in the workplace Commission a reliable early warning system that will alert industries and businesses on extreme weather events

Human Settlements

Priority Indicators: Human Settlements Theme Indicator Title Human Settlements Loss of industrial productivity Increased isolation of rural communities Decreased income from Tourism

Responses: Human Settlements Sub-Project: Loss of industrial productivity Identify and prioritise vulnerable industries and business Commission a reliable early warning system to alert industries & businesses on the possible occurrences of emergencies such as storms, floods, high temperatures and droughts Conduct workshops to advise industries and business on how to reduce the risk associated with the potential impacts of CC Promote the use of climate resilient technologies in industries and business.

Responses: Human Settlements Sub-Project: Increased isolation of rural communities Identify alternative access routes to rural communities Identify roads at risk of flooding and erosion and prioritise those for upgrading and maintenance Identify local responses that will reduce isolation of rural communities Build CC resilient road infrastructure that serves as a link for rural areas Implement flooding drainage systems that will reduce impacts on rural roads Develop economic nodes and improved service provision in rural areas to improve connectivity

Responses: Human Settlements Sub-Project: Decreased income from tourism Conduct climate change impact assessment on tourism Develop resilience programs for tourism assets Investigate available alternative tourism and recreational opportunities Develop and promote tourism opportunities that are climate change robus Develop disaster risk management plans that consider CC impacts on tourism assets

Water

Priority Indicators: Water Theme Indicator Title Water Less water available for irrigation and drinking

Responses: Water Sub-Project: Less water available for irrigation and drinking Research and improve understanding of CC impacts on water quality and availability Incorporate projected CC impacts into the planning of municipal water supply Identify and implement innovative water harvesting and savings initiatives Collect information on indigenous knowledge which has previously been utilised in the past Plan for projected increases in drought cycles as a result of CC Implement watershed management that responds to reduced water availability
