2 CONTENTS Contents 01 Why Resilience? 02 What is UN environment doing?

3 01. Resilience ...So why resilience? The term resilience is getting more and more common in today’s world where natural disasters and shocks are on the increase across the globe .. Calling for a combination of efforts focused on being cautious of what may happen (prepare); being able to respond and adapt or recover from the shock, disaster or the change.

4 ...So why resilience (cont’d)?
A number of threats, disasters of shocks are attributed to or escalated by environmental degradation and/ or climate change These threats and disasters caused by environmental degradation and climate change are very much interlinked.

5 01. Resilience resilience High rates of deforestation, and clearing of land could increase the vulnerability of areas to landslides or floods, but also contribute to further climate change related disasters such as drought and hunger.

6 01. Resilience Coastal communities are more vulnerable to CC Impacts such as sea level rise, contributing to salt water intrusion and causing some multiplier effects such as on agricultural land, or availability of For example, household water use. Generally natural ecosystems, infrastructure, agriculture and community livelihoods are also affected – picture Ocean road area (but also share Msuka Pemba case!)

7 What is UNEP doing on resilience?
02. UN environment What is UNEP doing on resilience? UNEP assist countries in the prevention of impacts from sea-level rise, natural disasters and climate change UNEP also addresses adverse effects of climate change on water supply and quality (Bagamoyo’s core capacities project) UNEP’s work has ensured that livelihoods in climate vulnerable regions are sustained, diversified and resilient UNEP has been a mobilizer of knowledge on climate change impacts and adaptation measures; it supports conducting comprehensive vulnerability assessments and identify adaptation options through the process of preparation of National Communications.

8 UNEP is providing support through:
02. UN environment UNEP uses Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EBA) to build resilience of vulnerable ecosystems UNEP is providing support through: methods, tools, guidelines and good practices to assess ecosystem vulnerabilities, value and evaluate ecosystem services for adaptation, restore ecosystem adaptation functions, and manage trans-boundary ecosystems piloting, experimenting and demonstrating adaptation at ecosystem and community levels, incorporating good practices of community-based adaptation and micro-credits national impact and vulnerability assessments of targeted ecosystems, capacity building and technical supports for integration of EBA into national policy, planning and investment framework collection, packaging and dissemination of good practices through the Global Adaptation Network
