To develop fitness skills in pupils Time Contents Teaching Points & Notes Resources/Equipment   WARM UP 10 mins PE Card 9 - Avoid the Tide PE Card 10 - Beach Flags Activity Make sure there is enough space for the game Try to develop the understanding of the flags by using different water safety scenarios. Bean Bags Beach Flag Posters MAIN ACTIVITY 25 mins PE Card 3 - Lifeguard Fit PE Card 11 - Lifeguard Sprints PE Card 12 - Sprint Starts PE Card 13 - Beach Relay Complete as many of the activities as possible in the time frame Record Lifeguard Fit results if you will repeat the activity Measuring tape for running track Start/Finish line markers COOL DOWN 5 mins PE Card 14 - Name in the Sand (stretching) Make sure there is enough space for the activities Ask the pupils to use water safety messages for the exercise None

PIRATES AND LIFEGUARDS PE Activity Card 1 PIRATES AND LIFEGUARDS Set Up & Equipment Several large hoops and lots of coloured bean bags (mats may be used instead of hoops) Spread the hoops around the activity area Description Split the class in to ‘Pirates’ and ‘Lifeguards’ The Lifeguards have a 30 second head start to place the bean bags in the corresponding coloured hoop (keeping the beach tidy and safe) On the blow of the whistle, the Pirates 'steal' the bean bags from their correct hoops and place them incorrectly. Pupils can only hold one bean bag at a time The Lifeguards have to keep going to try to keep the beach tidy and safe (putting the bags in the correct hoops) Progression & Notes Progression: No one can use their hands to carry the bean bags from one hoop to another

Always follow the Water Safety Code

LIFEGUARD FIT PE Activity Card 3 Four measurable activities to allow pupils to measure and develop their own performances. Complete as many as you can in the warm up time. Run Pupils run a set distance as fast as they can whilst another pupil records the time on a stopwatch. If there aren’t enough stopwatches, the time can be fixed and the number of laps/lengths of the hall can be counted Balance Pupils stand on one leg and time how long they can hold it Progression: Pupils stand on one leg and extend the other behind them Sit ups Pupils count how many sit ups they can do in a set time Reach stretch Pupils measure how far they can reach past their toes (or how far away they are) Extras: Have you improved on last week? (if this is a repeated activity). How do you feel? Teacher or pupils can record their results to see if they can improve next time

BEAN BAG HOOP THROW PE Activity Card 4 Set Up & Equipment Explain that it is important that Lifeguards can throw accurately to get rescue equipment to people who need it One hoop per group At least one bean bag each Target Description Place a hoop a few metres away from each group of pupils Pupils take turns in throwing a bean bag into the hoop Throw line Progression & Notes Group Progression: Move the hoops further away Individual Progression: For those who are regularly landing in the hoop, ask them to throw with their less dominant hand

BEAN BAG MULTI HOOP THROW PE Activity Card 5 BEAN BAG MULTI HOOP THROW Set Up & Equipment 3 hoops and 3 bean bags per pupil (or group of pupils) Place the 3 target hoops in a line extending away from the throwing position The first hoop is worth 5 points, the second is worth 10 points and the third is worth 20 20 points 10 points Description Each pupil in the group gets a set number of bean bags to throw (3 or 4) at the hoops. For every bean bag that lands completely in the hoop points are recorded and added to give final score 5 points Throw line Progression & Notes If pupils are put into groups by ability, the hoops for the more able groups can be further away to equalise the point scoring Create a competition between the groups

AROUND THE CLOCK PE Activity Card 6 Set Up & Equipment Number Cards (1 to 12 on pieces of paper), bean bags Set up a clock face (or a clock per group) using the number cards Description This activity really focuses on throwing accuracy Pupils stand behind the throw line and throw three beanbags at the clock Points are awarded based on number each bean bag lands closest to Target Throw line Progression & Notes Progressions: Increase the distance thrown Points are only awarded if the bean bag is touching the number card Set up a darts board instead of a clock face

BEAN BAG THROW RELAY PE Activity Card 7 Set Up & Equipment Split the pupils into teams 1 hoop per team and 1 bean bag per pupil Each team has a target hoop out in front of them Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 Team 4 Description Each team member takes their turn to throw their bean bag into their hoop If the bean bag misses the hoop they run, pick up the bean bag, return, and try again First team to get all their bean bags in their hoop wins Throw line Progression & Notes Allow pupils to take their second throw from where their first throw lands (top make it easier) Adjust the distance of the hoops to make the challenge easier or more difficult

SAFE CODE COOL DOWN PE Activity Card 8 Set Up & Equipment Space for pupils to run around Description Pupils will ‘act out’ the SAFE Code by performing the actions below when the teacher calls out ‘S’, ‘A’, ‘F’, ‘E’ Letter Response (shout) Action S “SAFE” Hand above the eyes, stretching left and right, looking for dangers A “ADVICE” Jog around the hall looking for advice F “FRIEND” Find a partner, sit feet to feet with knees slightly bent, hold hands and gently stretch back and forward E “EMERGENCY” Get help, jog to each corner of the hall and then back to the middle Progression & Notes Allow pupils to take their second throw from where their first throw lands (top make it easier) Adjust the distance of the hoops to make the challenge easier or more difficult

AVOID THE TIDE PE Activity Card 9 Set Up & Equipment 1- 3 bean bags Description The game is based on the game of Tag 1 pupil is the ‘tide’ and the rest of the pupils have the bean bags The ‘tide’ can only tag pupils who have a bean bag, so they must pass it to each other to stay safe If a pupil is caught by the ‘tide’ (tagged), or if they drop a bean bag, then they become the ‘tide’ Progression & Notes Make sure there is plenty of space for the game There may be more than 1 pupil playing the ‘tide’

BEACH FLAGS ACTIVITY PE Activity Card 10 Set Up & Equipment Position the four Beach Flag images on the walls spread around the room (such as one on each wall) Description Refresh the pupils knowledge of the Lifeguard Flags When you call out the name of a flag, the pupils have to run and stand by the flag Progression & Notes Call out water safety situations so that the children have to work out which flag the lifeguards would display, such as: Very big waves (Red flag – no swimming) Red & Yellow Lifeguarded area Safest place to swim Red Danger No swimming Black & White Water sports area No swimming Orange Windsock Direction and strength of the wind

LIFEGUARD SPRINTS PE Activity Card 11 Set Up & Equipment Make sure there is plenty of space for the pupils to run Mark out a 10, 15, and 20 metre start/finish line Group the pupils 1s and 2s Description Explain that this is an exercise that Beach Lifeguards do to practice getting to the water as quickly as possible When you say go, from a standing start the 1s must run the 10 metre track as quickly as possible. Then it’s 2s go Repeat the activity increasing the distance to the finish line to 15 then 12 metres Progression & Notes Progress onto the Sprint Starts activity – PE Card 12

SPRINT STARTS PE Activity Card 12 Set Up & Equipment Make sure there is plenty of space for the pupils to run Mark out a 10 metre start/finish line Group the pupils 1s and 2s Description Explain that this is an exercise that Beach Lifeguards do to practice getting to the water as quickly as possible Pupils start a 10 metre sprint from a variety of start positions: Standing start Sitting facing the finish Sitting facing away from the finish (jump up, turn, and run) Lying down on their tummy head facing towards the finish Lying down on their tummy head facing away from the finish (jump up, turn, turn, and run) Progression & Notes Increase the running distance to 12 or 15 metres

BEACH RELAY PE Activity Card 13 Set Up & Equipment Make sure there is plenty of space for the pupils to run Set up a race course with a start/finish line Group pupils into teams of approximately 4 Description Each pupil takes their turn at running the length of the course and tagging the next runner in their team (relay style). Each member of the team must complete the course and the first team to complete is the winner Progression Call out additional challenges during the race for the runners to complete, such as: Asking what the letters of the SAFE Code stand for Asking what the various Beach Flags mean Or additional exercise: “Do 1 sit-up”, “Do a start jump”

NAME IN THE SAND PE Activity Card 14 Set Up & Equipment Pupils need enough space to stretch on the spot Description Pupils outline their name on the ground (like righting in the sand) using there: Left hand Right hand Left foot Right foot Progression Ask the pupils to repeat the exercise but reaching as far away on the ground as possible “Really stretch your arms and legs” Give the pupils more complicated words to right, or ask them to right the whole of the SAFE Code
