Throwing Perform a pull throw Measure the distance of their throws Continue to develop techniques for throwing for increased distance Athletics –Year 4 Running Jumping Throwing Running Demonstrate an improved technique for sprinting Perform a relay, focusing on the baton changeover technique Develop a fluent changeover from a sprint start Speed up and slow down smoothly Vocabulary Pull throw Relates to the javelin In other sports a cricket ball throw and a football throw in Overarm throw With the ball in your throwing hand, point the other hand at the target and bend the hand back with the ball at the shoulder. Bring the ball overhead and swivel on your back foot as your turn your body to face the target. Bring the ball over your head and release the ball with a push Standing Long Jump A two-footed horizontal jump from a standing position Standing Triple Jump A horizontal jump involving a hop, step and jump from a standing position Crouch start A starting position for sprint races Compete / Perform Consistently perform and apply skills and techniques with accuracy and control Take part in competitive activities Jumping Learn how to combine a hop, step and jump to perform the standing triple jump Land safely and with control Begin to measure the distance jumped Evaluate Watch, describe and evaluate the effectiveness of performances Give ideas for how to improve Modify use of skills to achieve a better result

4 Athletics –Year 3 Vocabulary
Running Jumping Throwing Running Identify and demonstrate how different techniques can affect performance Focus on their arm and leg action to improve sprinting technique Select the most suitable pace for the distance and their fitness level in order to maintain their run Begin to combine running with jumping over hurdles Identify and demonstrate stamina and explain its importance for runners Vocabulary Push throw Relates to the shot-put Also used in Netball as a chest pass or a free throw in Basketball Pull throw Relates to the javelin In other sports a cricket ball throw and a football throw in Overarm throw A skill most commonly used in sports for throwing far and for making quick, accurate passes Standing Long Jump A two-footed horizontal jump from a standing position Take-off The take-off phase during the standing long jump is the first part of the jump where the athlete is preparing to leave the ground: bend ankles, knees and hips keep eyes focused forward swing arms behind body straighten legs both feet leave the ground together. Hurdling A track event that involves running and jumping over obstacles at speed Lead leg The leg which clears the hurdle first when hurdling Throwing Throw with greater control and accuracy Show increasing control in their overarm throw Perform a push throw Continue to develop techniques to throw for increased distance Jumping Use one and two feet to take off and to land with Develop an effective take-off for the standing long jump Develop an effective flight phase for the standing long jump Land safely and with control Compete / Perform Perform learnt skills and techniques with control Compete against self and others Evaluate Watch, describe and evaluate the effectiveness of performances Describe how their performance has improved over time
