Act Two, Scene iv: 15 Minutes Questions Which characters begin this scene? Why do Mercutio and Benvolio become frustrated with Romeo? What was Romeo’s response for his actions? Which characters from the Capulet House enter the scene? What exposes Nurse’s station in this scene? What secret is told during this scene? Act Two, Scene iv: Answers 1.Benvolio and Mercutio are the first to enter this scene. 2.Mercutio and Benvolio are frustrated with Romeo because he brushes them off. Romeo apologizes but states that he has business to attend to. 3.Nurse and Peter enter the scene. 4.Nurse continues to bumble over her words and confuses words when speaking with Romeo. 5.Nurse tells Romeo that she has discussed the plans of marriage with Juliet. Juliet will attend confession today, but will really be seeing Friar Lawrence in order to marry Romeo.

Act Two, Scene iv: 10 Minutes Working with Figurative Language Explain why the following quote is an extended metaphor: Mercutio: More than Prince of Cats. O, he’s the coura- geous captain of compliments. He fights as you sing pricksong– keeps time, distance, and proportion; he rests his minim rests, one two, and the third in your bosom! (18-22) Explain the hyperbole in this example: Romeo: Here’s goodly gear! A sail, a sail! Mercutio: Two, two! A shirt and a smock. (94-96) Act Two, Scene iv: Answers 1.Benvolio and Mercutio are the first to enter this scene. Act Two, Scene v: 15 Minutes Questions Juliet begins this scene with what type of speech? Does Nurse deliver the expected information as soon as she sees Juliet? What does Nurse do? Does this surprise you? What is shrift? What will happen to Juliet when she arrives for shrift? 1.Juliet begins the scene with a soliloquy. 2. Nurse does not give the expected information as soon as she sees Juliet. She talks for quite a while about how old she has gotten, and then begins to worry about Juliet’s mother. This is not surprising, considering Nurse talks quite a lot. 3.Shrift is another word for confession. 4.Juliet will get married to Romeo rather than go to confession. Friar Lawrence will be there to perform the ceremony.

Act Two, Scene v: 10 Minutes Working with Figurative Language Explain why the following quote is an example of personification: Juliet: Love’s heralds should be thoughts, Which ten times faster glides than the sun’s beams Driving back shadows over low’ring hills. (4-6) Explain the simile(s) in this example: Juliet: But old folks, many feign as they were dead– Unwieldy, slow, heavy and pale as lead. (16-17) 1.Juliet begins the scene with a soliloquy. 2.
