1 R&J Act II

2 Prologue Summarizes Act I & hints that Romeo and Juliet will find a way to be together.

3 Scene 1 Allusion: refers to Greek Myth of love (Venus & Cupid)
Romeo’s friends think that he is still in love with Rosaline Romeo is just as alone as he was when he still loved Rosaline Mercutio and Benvolio give up looking for Romeo

4 Scene 2 Metaphor: Juliet = Sun Imagery: light (Juliet = Sun)
Metaphor: Juliet’s eyes = stars Juliet will disown her family if she can be with Romeo Juliet hates the name “Montague” not the person “Romeo.” Romeo is willing to change his name just to be with Juliet Romeo says Juliet’s family cannot stop their love Juliet is afraid that her family will kill Romeo if they find him Romeo says he would rather die than live without Juliet

5 Scene 2 Juliet believes that Romeo loves her, but she wonders if their love came too easily Juliet doesn’t want Romeo to promise that he loves her; she wants him to prove it through his actions Romeo proposes and Juliet accepts Juliet says that if Romeo is serious he must go and arrange the wedding Romeo says he will have everything arranged by 9AM Romeo goes to the Priest to arrange the marriage

6 Scene 3 Soliloquy: a speech given by a character spoken to himself when he/she is alone on stage Nothing is completely good or evil. It depends on how it is used. Foreshadowing: hints at Friar Lawrence's involvement in the tragedy to come Shows Friar Lawrence's knowledge of herbs and drugs Romeo explains that he is in love with Juliet and asks Friar Lawrence to marry them Friar Lawrence tells Romeo that he says the words of love but he really doesn’t understand love Friar Lawrence agrees to marry them only because he thinks it will stop the feud between the two families

7 Scene 4 Tybalt sent a challenge to Romeo. He wants to duel.
Tybalt is an expert duelist (fencing, sword fighting, etc.) Alliteration: words begin with the same sound (line , ) Romeo is in a much better mood. Nurse comes to find Romeo (Notice its Noon and not 9AM) Wedding Plan: Juliet is to go to confession at Friar Lawrence's room. They will be married there. Romeo’s servant will bring a rope ladder to the Nurse for Romeo to use to climb into Juliet’s room for the wedding night. Nurse thinks that Paris would make a better husband than Romeo

8 Scene 5 Juliet is very nervous as she waits for Nurse to return from meeting Romeo. She is 3 hrs late. Nurse teases Juliet by not giving her Romeo’s message immediately. Juliet goes to Friar Lawrence to get married.

9 Scene 6 Friar Lawrence prays that God will bless the wedding night regardless of what else might happen to the couple Friar Lawrence warns that things that happen so fast often end just as quickly and explosively Juliet worries that Romeo only talks about love and doesn’t understand true love Romeo and Juliet get married
