Hinduism versus Buddhism AIM: What are the key differences between the two early religions? What are the key similarities? Do Now – Turn and Talk Describe Dharma Karma Reincarnation Enlightenment Nirvana Caste System

Caste System Caste System - The division of Hindu society into four major hereditary classes

Remember this class system is in lots of civilizations

Dharma Dharma - rules of religious and social conduct

Karma Karma - influence of past deeds in determining one's status in this life and the next.

Reincarnation Reincarnation (rebirth) - an individual spirit is born again and again until true enlightenment is achieved

Reincarnation Samsara is the wheel of rebirth which means the soul is reborn from one life form to another. People may be reincarnated at a higher or lower level of existence depending on their karma from their present life. People may be reborn as plants or animals or they may be elevated to a higher caste as a human. Death is not final for Hindus as they expect to be reborn many times.

Enlightenment Enlightenment – Spiritual wisdom and knowledge Hinduism - Nirvana Buddhism - Moksha

Nirvana Nirvana – (Buddhist) release from the endless cycle of rebirth; the end of suffering; salvation

Hinduism – Oldest religion 1) Is an example of cultural diffusion Blend of religion between the Indus Valley people and Indo-Europeans 2) Unlike the other major religions it can not be traced back to an original founder 3) Many Gods 4) Escape suffering liberating the soul from the illusions, disappointments, and mistakes of everyday existence.

Cultural Diffusion At first, Aryans and non-Aryans followed their own forms of religion. As they intermingled, their religious beliefs blended; created hundreds of gods. Culture became more complex-led to questioning of the world, and the wealth and power held by Brahmin priests. Out of the turmoil, new religious ideas arose.

Hinduism Moksha - a state of perfect understanding of all things. A) When someone understands the relationship between Atman (Self) and Brahman (ultimate reality). Brahman - The world soul has the personalities of three gods: 1) Brahma, the creator 2) Vishnu, the protector 3) Shiva, the destroyer.

Brahma – The Creator

Vishnu – The Protector

Vishnu's blue body is often depicted in blue Vishnu's blue body is often depicted in blue. The color blue symbolizes the infinite Why does the blue body represent infinity? Why do the gods have so many arms? Why are they holding so many objects?
