IEA Technology Collaboration Programmes (TCPs) A time-proven, flexible mechanism Created or discontinued according to energy policy challenges Currently 39 TCPs Cross-cutting activities Energy efficiency Fossil fuels Fusion power Renewable energy and hydrogen Focus of recent outcomes Understanding socio-economic aspects of technologies Reducing greenhouse gas emissions Advancing science and technology Contributing to benchmarks and international standards Facilitating deployment Improving efficiency NOTE! The statistics in the publication are set at 31 December 2015. The information below represents participations (and those in discussion) as of 11 May 2017. 52 countries 27 IEA 25 non-members (Accession, Association and Partner countries) 5 intergovernmental organisations EC OPEC ITER - international fusion experiment ECOWAS – Economic Community of West African States RCREEE – Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Governments - 93% IEA top 3: United States, Japan and Korea Non-members top 3: China, Mexico and Russia Private sector – 7% Oil/gas majors: e.g. Chevron, ExxonMobil, Schlumberger, Petrobras Power generation: e.g. RWE, Doosan Supply: e.g. Anglo American, BHEL Industry associations: e.g. Chinese Wind Energy Association, SolarPower Europe Focused research institutes: e.g. Institute for Electric Research (Mexico) Engineering firms Consultancies 4 new members Chile: The Ministry of Energy joined the Advanced Motor Fuels TCP - a first! India: National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) in the Ocean Energy Systems TCP South Africa: Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) joined the Photovoltaic Power Systems TCP UAE: Dubai Energy and Water Authority (DEWA) joined the Clean Coal Center TCP This map is without prejudice to the status of sovereignty over any territory, to the delimitation of international frontiers and boundaries, and to the name of any territory, city or area.

R&D and Deployment – Essential Complements of Innovation Mission Innovation Launched at COP21 - Leaders of over 20 countries & the EC, supporting a doubling of clean energy R&D investments over next 5 Created in 2010 -forum for major economies and forward-leaning countries Future Innovations Science Research Development Analysis Deployment Now Policies Best Practices Capacity Building Prizes, Recognition Tech Demos There are clear synergies between the work of the CEM and Mission Innovation. As host to the CEM Secretariat and a key partner organisation of Mission Innovation, the IEA will work to ensure private sector stakeholders are informed of developments in both forums, linking R&D to deployment. The IEA’s work spans the entire span of the activities that will take place under Mission Innovation to accelerate energy technology innovation Create New Ideas Reduce Cost Raise Awareness Facilitate Market Uptake Improve Performance

Questions for the audience: How international cooperation across the public sector can leverage private-sector engagement? What national capacity is needed to participate in international technology collaboration programs? (research institutes? Funding for R&D? Universities and trained experts? Institutional linkages? Political commitment?) How to integrate available international support tools and technology collaboration initiatives to serve countries better in technology development and deployment?
