Options 2018

Designing a curriculum Needs of the individual National Government Local Environment Needs of the individual Balance Enjoyment

The English Baccalaureate The EBacc is a performance measure introduced into school league tables in 2011. It is now one of the key measures by which a school is measured. It is not a qualification in itself. The measure shows where students have achieved a Grade 5 or better across a core of academic subjects – English, Mathematics, two Sciences, History or Geography and a Modern Foreign Language.

Progress 8 Progress 8 is a performance measure introduced into school league tables in 2016. The measure shows how much progress students have made in a range of subjects including the EBacc subjects and up to 3 others. This is also not a qualification in itself; but in the future it may become a simple way for employers and education providers to judge candidates.

The Future "I always avoid prophesying beforehand because it is much better to prophesy after the event has already taken place. " --Winston Churchill

? Old Government measure to assess school performance 5 x GCSEs at C or above including English and Maths New Progress 8 Score EBacc English and Maths at Grade 5 and above. Employers and Further Education requirements 5 x GCSEs at C or above including English and Maths New ?

Sixth Form Requirements Need to achieve an absolute minimum of five grade 9 - 5 including English + Maths. Prospectus details individual subject requirements. Grade 6 in all chosen subjects. e.g. Maths or French: Grade 6 or above. Ask your teachers for their advice.

A level and beyond The choice of A Level subjects should be based around interest & enjoyment of the subject, ability to do well in the subject and what is needed for a specific degree. However, ‘selecting’ universities such as those in the Russell Group and 1994 Group are highly competitive, demand high grades and have preferred subjects. The Russell Group has produced a document, Informed Choices, giving advice about choosing A Level subjects for entry to one of its institutions. A synopsis of ‘facilitating’ subjects is below:- English Maths Physics Biology Chemistry Geography History Languages

What is studied at KS4? THE COMPULSORY CURRICULUM OPTION CHOICES This is a fixed set of subjects which the majority of students study. OPTION CHOICES Up to four further choices selected from a large range of subjects.

Making Choices An important step. The first time students have the choice. Think carefully. Difficult to make a serious error about the future. But it does determine what a student does for the next two years. Keeping doors open!
