Welcome to Literacy Night Presented by: Beth Rash, Leia Beale and Andrea Hsu Elizabeth Lane Elementary 9-27-2012

Balanced Literacy The components~ Reader’s Workshop: 45 minutes to 1 hour time frame Word Study: Working and sorting words based on spelling and sound patterns Interactive Read Aloud: Whole group, listen to a story, and interact through discussions, stop & jots, and visualizations Shared Reading: Reading a common text together Writer’s Workshop: Studying and applying author’s crafts to personal narratives and argumentative pieces.

Reader’s Workshop Mini-lesson: Teacher presents a reading skill or strategy to the class (less than 10 minutes) Anchor charts are created to help students apply skill or strategy over the course of the year. Independent Reading: Students reading books at independent level (Good Fit Books) while teacher is conferring with small groups or individuals. Share: Celebrate positive application of mini- lesson’s teaching point.

Good Fit Books Book Bags: To keep books safe and organized Book Bags contain: ~ Good fit books (I-PICK and Leveled Readers) ~ A balanced reading diet Going Shopping: Self-selecting good fit books

I-PICK Good Fit Books I- I choose the books P- purpose I- interest C- comprehension K- know most of the words (5 finger check) Great to use at home or when selecting books not at school.
