2 Why is this language Important? The language is consistent from kindergarten through high school Language is developmentally appropriate and makes sense to students Students are able to practice at home

3 What is Assessed? Comprehension: The ability to think about and understand what is being read. Decoding: The ability to break apart and figure out unknown words. Fluency: The ability to read like a story-teller Sight Words: High frequency words that students can instantly recognize. Data gathered is used in comparison with Grade Level Benchmarks

4 Assessment Results Determine Independent and Instructional levels Help students determine “just right books” Allow for a teacher and student to have a reading conference Allow teacher to plan Guided Groups

5 Independent vs. Instructional Independent Reading Level –Read with ease –Makes hardly any errors –Excellent comprehension –Read alone with confidence Instructional Reading Level –Needs support of a teacher or parent –Students are reading with 90-95% accuracy –May be introduced to new vocabulary or new reading skills

6 A Day in Reader’s Workshop Mini-lesson – Teacher models and actively engages students – Turn and talk with a partner Independent Reading Time – Student reads a just right book – Student practices active reading strategies – Teacher confers with students – Teacher pulls small guided reading groups or strategy groups – Teacher may give a running record Partner Reading – Students read or share thinking with a partner Class Share – Students share what they have learned or practiced as a reader

7 Classroom Happenings Read Aloud : Used to model important reading strategies Turn and Talk : Allow students to discuss an idea together and share thinking Stop and Jot : While reading or listening students pause to record thinking Building Stamina: Continual reading without interruption Turn & Talk Stop & Jot

Clarifying Making sense of what was read Connecting Text to Self Text to Text Text to World Questioning Before, during and after reading to understand Reacting How do I feel? Why? Summarizing Retelling the story in order Include the character’s names, setting, and problem *Does not have to be at the end of the book Visualizing Making a mental picture or movie
