High Schools (9-12) Grab n’ Go Breakfast Option Administrators, Teachers, Building & Grounds Staff and Students Training TELL: For high schools grades 9 through 12, we will offer a “Grab ‘N Go” model where mobile service carts are set up on campus to allow students to grab breakfast before their first class. Provided by the LAUSD Food Services Division 10.31.2016

Training Goals At the end of this training Administrators, teachers, students and Building and Grounds staff will be knowledgeable in the: Benefits of Breakfast Comparisons of BIC and Grab n’ Go Grab n’ Go Process Role of the Student Role of the Teacher Role of the Building and Grounds Worker READ SLIDE: At the end of this training school administrators, teachers, students and building and grounds staff will be knowledgeable in the benefits of breakfast, aware of the comparisons of BIC and Grab n’ Go, the Grab n’ Go process and how the meals will be served to the students. We will also discuss the role of the Food Service staff, students, teachers and that of the Building and Grounds staff.

Benefits of Breakfast Many Americans experience hunger and food insecurity. In 2014, 49 million people were found to be food insecure, with 16 million of those being children. 16.3% of families in LA county are food insecure. Whether due to limited access to and or the unavailability of nutritious food, students are coming to school hungry. 80% of LAUSD students are eligible for free/reduced breakfast, yet only 29% participated in the program before BIC Hunger impairs students development and achievement Eating a nutritious breakfast also helps children perform better on standardized tests, show improved cognitive functions, attention, and memory and has a positive effect on overall nutrition. What is Grab n’ Go? Grab n’ Go is a convenient program where reimbursable meal options are selected from a mobile cart conveniently located at entrances or other high traffic areas at high schools grades 9-12 only, 10 minutes before the first bell and students eat it outside, in the hallways, or possibly in the classroom. TELL: Grab n’ Go is a convenient program where reimbursable meal options are selected from a mobile cart conveniently located at entrances or other high traffic areas at high schools grades 9-12 only, 10 minutes before the first bell and students eat it outside, in the hallways, or possibly in the classroom.

LAUSD’s Grab n’ Go Process Grab n’ Go is a process where students pick-up a reimbursable meal from a mobile cart located at school entrances or other high traffic areas before the start of school Food Service staff prepare the reimbursable meals Menu items are transported in insulated bags on mobile carts and roll out the mobile cart to the designated location(s) Students select a reimbursable meal from mobile carts using Offer Versus Serve options; however a fruit must be selected Carts are equipped with a computer for point of service and the students must enter their pin number to account for their meal This option is not “Universal Breakfast”, students are required to pay based on meal eligibility; payments must be collected at the point of service Students can take a breakfast and eat it outside, in the hallways, in the classroom; depending on the school’s plan Students dispose of trash into the containers in designated locations TELL: Grab n’ Go is a process where students pick-up a reimbursable meal from a mobile cart located at school entrances or other high traffic areas before the start of school. Trained Food Service staff will prepare the meals and transport the menu items in insulated bags to retain safe food temperatures. The bags will be placed on a mobile cart and the Food Services staff will roll out the mobile cart to the designated location(s). Students can pick up a reimbursable breakfast from a mobile cart using Offer Versus Serve options; where students must take at least 3 of the 4 offered menu items; however a fruit must be selected to remain in compliance with Federal and State requirements. Carts are equipped with a computer for point of service and the students must enter their pin number to account for their meal. Since this option is not “Universal Breakfast”, it will require students to pay based on meal eligibility and payments will be collected at the point of service. Students can take their breakfast and eat it outside, in the hallways, in the classroom, depending on the school’s plan. Lastly, students will dispose of trash into the containers at the designated locations.

Meal Service Start Here Students select a reimbursable meal TELL: This is a photo of one of the styles of mobile carts that the Food Services staff rolls out onto the school campus for the Grab n’ Go meal program. Student line up at the mobile cart to select a reimbursable meal, enter their pin number into the point of service computer at the end of the line, and the students eat their meal outside, in the hallways, or possibly in the classroom. Students select a reimbursable meal Students enter their pin number at the POS Students consume breakfast in the pre-determined area

Sample Menu Items Italian Cheese & Egg Pocket, Orange Juice and Milk Fiesta Egg & Cheese Sandwich, Orange Juice and Milk TELL: These are just a few of the items that are offered at breakfast. All items are individually wrapped. Meals include a fresh fruit or fruit juice, and choice of 1% or nonfat milk. On days when there are three menu items offered; the student must take both the fruit and main breakfast item which will be automatically placed inside the paper sack for the student, and the student may choose to select or decline the milk. On days when there are four menu items offered; the student must take the fruit and two additional menu items. They may decline one menu item of their choice, with the exception of the required fruit which will be automatically placed inside the paper sack for the student. The food items selected will be packed inside a paper sack for the student. Vanilla Yogurt, Crunchy Yogurt, Apple and Milk

BIC and Grab n’ Go Comparisons Universal Feeding (all children eat at no charge) Yes No Served inside the classroom Eaten inside the classroom Maybe Students have greater access to breakfast Increase in participation to over 70% Incentive payment to schools One breakfast service period Offer Versus Serve Point of Service required TELL: Let’s compare the two programs. Breakfast in the Classroom program provides breakfast meals at no-charge regardless of school’s counting and claiming procedure unlike grab and go. The meals are served inside the classroom, unlike Grab n’ Go where the students receive their meal from mobile service carts. The BIC programs require the students to eat inside the classroom during the first 10 minutes of the class, the Grab n’ Go has no set eating parameters. Students in BIC campus have greater access to breakfast therefore a high increase of participation greater than 70% can be attained. Those qualifying sites participating in BIC receive incentive payments to the schools, where Grab n’ Go is not eligible for the incentive program. To date the highest participation at a Grab n’ Go site is less than 20 percent, which is in line with the school breakfast participation prior to Grab n’ Go. Both programs offer only one breakfast meal service, permitting the students to take only one breakfast per day. Students have the option to refuse one breakfast menu component as the Grab n’ Go program is considered offer versus serve and a point of service system is taken at the point of meal service for both programs. MM 4/16/14

Students’ Role The students daily role includes: Select a reimbursable meal from the mobile breakfast carts prior to the start of school Enter their PIN number at the mobile cart Take their breakfast and eat it at the locations designated in the school’s plan When finished eating he/she must dispose of trash in containers in designated locations TELL: The students daily duties include picking up a reimbursable breakfast from the mobile breakfast carts prior to the start of school. The students enter their PIN number at the mobile cart and pay any applicable co-payments. They take their breakfast and eat it at the locations designated in the school’s plan. Once they are finished eating he/she must dispose of trash into containers in designated locations.

Teachers' Role The teachers daily role includes: Allow students to eat in the classroom Emphasize cleanliness in the classroom Encourage students to discard trash into containers placed in the designated locations TELL: At this point, you are now aware of the general guidelines for the Grab n’ Go program that will be implemented in your school. The teachers daily role includes allowing the students to eat in the classroom, emphasize cleanliness in the classroom. Encourage the students to discard their trash into containers placed in the designated locations.

Building and Grounds Workers’ Role The Plant Manager and Building and Grounds Workers daily duties include: Placing trash containers in the designated locations Cleaning as required where applicable Set up breakfast trash container as needed Dump trash and remove to dumpster after breakfast Reline trash cans Collecting trash in and around the campus High traffic areas as designated At the entrance/exit of the building Dispose of trash per normal processes TELL: The Plant Manager and Building and Grounds workers daily duties include the placement of trash containers in the designated location before the Grab n’ Go program begins. To save time from cleaning spills that may occur inside the trash container, it is suggested to pre-line the trash containers with a base liner. This practice is not mandatory, but has shown to be effective. Building and Grounds staff members will clean as required where applicable. The Building and Grounds staff will collect the trash from the designated trash location; in high traffic areas, at the entrance/exit of the building. Sites with multi levels will collect the trash left near the near the elevator (if applicable), or near the stairwell. The collected Grab n’ Go trash is then disposed of as per normal processes.

Questions? Thank you! LAUSD Food Services Division TELL: At this point, I would like to address any questions you may have regarding the Grab n’ Go meal program. INSTRUCTOR: Solicit questions and provide answers. In the event you do not know the answer, write down the questions and discuss with the administrator what would be the best and quicker way to get back to the group with the answer at a later date.
