8 School Breakfast Models & Allies
Average Participation in School Breakfast By Model of Delivery Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) Breakfast is served and consumed in the classroom Second Chance Breakfast Meals are served after first period Allow kids to eat in class Grab and Go to the Classroom Meals served in convenient, easy to access locations before and after the bell Allow kids to eat in class 1/5 Kids food insecure in TN Opportunity for nutrients to be delivered through the Federal nutrition programs UNIVERSAL breakfast: When Breakfast is provided free to all students Breakfast in the Classroom: 88% participation rate. Breakfast in the classroom means breakfast is served and consumed in the classroom. Students or staff may deliver breakfasts to classroom via coolers or insulated rolling bags. Breakfast in the Classroom typically takes 10–15 minutes.  Second Chance Breakfast: 70% participation rate. Second chance is when students eat breakfast during a break in the morning, often between first period and second period, or midway between breakfast and lunch. Sometimes schools open their cafeteria back up for second change, or they use the Grab and Go breakfast model. This model is particularly effective for middle and high school students who may not be hungry first thing in the morning, or they just don’t want to eat in the cafeteria before school starts. Grab and Go: 64% participation. Grab and Go is where students pick up conveniently packaged breakfasts from mobile service carts in high traffic areas, such as hallways, entryways or cafeterias. Students can eat anywhere on school grounds before and after the bell has rung. Traditional Cafeteria Breakfast: 50% participation. Note: breakfast model participation rates are based on Share Our Strength’s analysis of breakfast participation in a total of 798 schools in 8 states (AR, CO, IL, LA, MD, MT, NC, and VA).
