Introduction ISO is a global federal of 118 countries headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. ISO is to promote the development of standardization to facilitate the international exchange of goods and services, and to develop cooperation in intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity. ISO publishes standards that set criteria for film speed, data stored on ATM and credit cards, etc. ISO systems standards is based on a total quality management (TQM) approach, where systems and processes are critical, in turn resulting in a quality product.

ISO 14000 ISO 14000 is a series of voluntary international standards on environmental management. It was developed under ISO Technical Committee 207, for addressing six aspects of environments: - Environmental Management Systems (EMS) - Environmental Auditing & Related Investigations - Environmental Labels and Declarations (EL) - Environmental Performance Evaluation (EPE) - Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) - Terms and Definitions (T&D)

ISO 14000 Origins The Rio de Janeiro Summit or Declaration on the Environment, in 1992 Strategic Advising Group Env. proposed for: - SC1: Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001/14004) - SC2: Environmental Auditing and Related Environmental Investigations (ISO 14010, 14011, 14012) - SC3: Environmental Labeling (ISO14020 series) - SC4: Environmental Performance Evaluation (ISO 14030 series) - SC5: Life Cycle Assessment (ISO 14040 series) - TCG: Terms and Definitions (ISO 14050 series)

ISO 14000 Concerns Five chemically related Halogenic elements, fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and astatine (At).

ISO 14000 Orientations ISO 14000 series consist of two major groups: (1) organization oriented standards and (2) product oriented standards. OOS provides comprehensive guidance for establishing, maintaining and evaluating an environmental management system (EMS). POS concerns with determining the environmental impacts of products and services over their life cycles, and with environmental labels and declarations

Key Elements ISO 14001 EMS (1) • Environmental Policy The environmental policy and the requirements to pursue this policy via objectives, targets, and environmental programs • Planning The analysis of the environmental aspects of the organization • Implementation Implementation and organization of processes to control and improve operational activities that are critical from an environmental perspective

Key Elements ISO 14001 EMS (2) • Measurement & Evaluation Mechanism of audit for SOP & MOP vs. Actual practices. • Review and Improvement Audit reports with Non-conformance report (NCR) & Opportunity for improvement (OFI) * All responsibled by the Quality Management Representative (QMR)

EMS Audits □ ISO 14010 - provides general principles of environmental auditing (superseded by ISO 19011) □ ISO 14011 - provides specific guidance on audit an environmental management system (now superseded by ISO 19011) □ ISO 14012 - provides guidance on qualification criteria for environmental auditors and lead auditors (now superseded by ISO 19011) □ ISO 14013/5 - provides audit program review and assessment material.

Pre-audit prior certification Internal audit, voluntary by the company. third party to assess the status of the EMS relative to ISO 14001. Strong like hood that the EMS of the company will meet the requirements of a formal certification audit.
