Ms. Butler 5th grade Math Curriculum Night 2017

About Me: I grew up in the Atlanta Area. I graduated from Roswell High School and Georgia State University. I have 2 children. Both of my children went through Fulton county schools. My daughter has a undergraduate degree in Engineering and a MBA from Georgia Tech. She is married and currently working at NCR. My son is attending Georgia State and working as a baseball coach. My first career was in business. I worked as a Certified Public Accountant until my oldest child started kindergarten. The decision to become a teacher was very easy for me. I grew up wanting to be a Math teacher! This is my 17th year of teaching, all in Fulton county schools. I consider myself to be a life long learner. My favorite things to do away from school are learning about new places and people through travel. I also like to spend time improving my skills in photography.

Teaching children inspires me in many ways Teaching children inspires me in many ways. I love to see students acquire new skills. I love to see them enjoy learning. It makes me very proud when they are successful. I believe in the importance of all my student’s overall education. Specifically that they have a strong foundation in Math before entering middle school.

Guided Math and Math Workshop. Mini lessons taught by a teacher in small groups . Students practice skills utilizing different Math Learning Centers that they rotate through while the teacher meets with a small group. Examples of Learning Centers Problem Solving Task Cards Games Technology Math through Literature Independent Practice Math Journal

Students keep track of their learning center work each week on a recording sheet that is turned in for a classwork grade. They turn their work each Monday and get a new recording sheet for the next week. Homework is assigned as skills are taught. Usually on Mondays due on Wednesdays and on Wednesdays due on Fridays. Students are writing these assignments in their agendas. As we implement the google classroom, I will be able to communicate assignments daily. Quiz and Unit Test dates will be posted on my website ms.janbutler.weebly.com and the students will record them in their agendas. I try to schedule these on Fridays as much as possible. We use our student workbooks as a resource. The pages used are torn out and filed in your child’s main binder behind the math tab. The workbook is also accessible online. Other items such as lesson guides and other math notes and resources are also filed there. Everything that your child needs to study by will be in their binder. Please leave those items in the binders until after the unit test.

Curriculum You can find the standards for each of the units on my website. Click on the tab labeled 5th grade standards or 6th grade standards. I will also post on my blog each week the standard that each class is currently working on. Continuous Achievement— 5.1 Students begin with the 5th grade unit one Complete one year ending with the last unit for 5th grade curriculum 5.2 Students begin with the 5th grade unit five (mid 5th grade curriculum) Complete one year ending with the 4th unit of 6th grade curriculum 6.1 Students begin with the 6th grade unit one- Complete one year ending with the last unit for 6th grade curriculum
