VOLLEYBALL

HISTORY In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass. Morgan created the game of volleyball, at that time called Mintonette. Volleyball originated in the United States in 1895 as a blend of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball

ORIGIN OF VOLLEYBALL Mintonette was designed to be an indoor sport. Mintonette was less rough than basketball for older members of the YMCA, while still requiring some athletic ability. The first rules required for a net to be 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 meters) high, a 25 × 50 foot (7.6 × 15.2 meter) court. Each team could have as many players as a team wanted. In case of a miss serve, a second try was allowed. Hitting the ball into the net was a fault, with loss of the point or a side-out, except in the case of a first serve attempt.

OBJECT OF THE GAME The object of the game is to WIN THE MATCH. Match A match is won by the first team to win 3 out of 5 games. As soon as a team wins 3 games, the match is over. Game A game is played to 25 points, the first team gets to 25 wins. Games must be won by at least 2 points. So, if there is a 24-24 tie, the game shall be played until one team has a two point lead. If the match goes to a 5th game, the game is played to 15 points. Point A point is scored by a team every time the opponent commits a fault. A point is scored every time the ball lands in the opponents court.

COURT The Center Line The center line extends from sideline to sideline underneath the net. The center line separates the courts playing area into two equal halves, each 30 by 30 feet. Serving Area The serving area is the area behind the endline where the server serves.

VOLLEYBALL EQUIPMENT Net The net is 1 meter (3 ft.) and 9.5 meters (32 ft.) long when stretched. Net Antennas Antennas are attached to the net inline with the outside edge of the sideline. Referee Stand The volleyball game rules require the referee stand to be a stable platform that elevates the volleyball referees head to about 2 or 3 feet above the top of the net. The Ball The volleyball must be spherical

BASIC RULES FOR PLAYING THE GAME 6 players on a team, 3 on the front row and 3 on the back row Maximum of three hits per side Player may not hit the ball twice in succession (A block is not considered a hit) A ball hitting a boundary line is “in” It is legal to contact the ball with any part of a players body

RULES VIOLATION Contacting the ball illegally (lifting, carrying, throwing, etc. ) Touching the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play Crossing the court centerline with any part of your body

FAMOUS HITS SERVE Server must serve from behind the end line until after contact. Ball may be served underhand or overhand. Ball must be clearly visible to opponents before serve.

RETURN THE BALL The typical sequence of hits is pass, set, spike (or attack). Sometimes the ball can be blocked instead

PASS FOREARM PASS OVERHEAD PASS you have to use for forearms. You have to move towards the ball and flex your legs. Your arms should be extended and your hands intertwined. At the moment of hitting, extend your legs and follow the movement with the inclination of the trunk forward. OVERHEAD PASS you have to flex your legs, place below the ball and hit it in front of your face. You must hit the ball with your hand, while you’re extending your arms and legs. The fingers are the latest to hit the ball. .

SET Your feet should be shoulder width apart with your knees slightly bent. Now pretend you are holding a bucket in front of you with two hands. Then dump your imaginary bucket on your head. The ball should contact only your fingertips. Upon contact extend your legs and your arms and look to your target.

ATTACK SPIKE As you take your last two step you want to load your legs, ready to jump, and bring your arms up above your head. Reach and contact the ball at the highest point you can. Snap your wrist upon contact. Follow through, swinging your arm all the way down to your side. The ball will go in the direction of which your hand was pointing when you hit it. BLOCK Follow the set and line up with the hitter. Focus on the hitter to read where he or she is going to hit and how hard. Stand as close to the net as possible without hitting it. Jump up straight with big arms and open hands. Reach over the net and down to cut off the hitter's angles. Go after the ball and "grab it" on a tight set
