Standard 7.L.1.4 Students will describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. Summarize the general functions of the major systems of the human body (digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, and excretion) and ways that these systems interact with each other to sustain life.

The Circulatory System

Flow of Blood through the Body

Main Function of the Circulatory System Transport materials throughout the body! What are these materials? Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Water, Food, Waste, Hormones, or Poisons

Parts of the System Heart

Parts of the System Vessels: Arteries Veins Capillaries

Blood Oxygen-poor blood has Carbon Dioxide in it. Oxygen-rich blood has Oxygen in it.

Parts of the System Lungs

Parts of the System Cell are the building blocks of all parts of the system.

Flow of Blood through the Body In the heart, blood flows through the right atrium and ventricle, to the lungs, to the left atrium and ventricle, and then to the body.

Flow of Blood through the Body Oxygen-rich blood leaves the left heart through an artery, moving to the rest of the body. Largest artery is the aorta.

Flow of Blood through the Body Arteries begin to branch and branch to become capillaries. While blood is in the capillaries, oxygen and nutrients seep through the walls to be delivered to the body cells. Waste and Carbon Dioxide are picked up.

4 Parts of your Blood Red Blood Cells – carry Oxygen, coated in hemoglobin, produced in your bone marrow.

Flow of Blood through the Body Oxygen-poor blood is transported to the right heart through veins.

4 Parts of your Blood White Blood Cells – attack bateria and viruses, produced in bone marrow, produce antibodies

4 Parts of your Blood Plasma – liquid portion of your blood, carries all the solid parts

4 Parts of your Blood Platelets – explode and produce fibrin, this makes scabs over cuts, clots your blood.
