British identity: Project proposal Ella Butterworth

theme My chosen themes within British identity that I will explore are London, Tea, and British culture. I am going to research what makes us British and how others view us as a country.

research During these next few weeks I am going to be researching into British culture and stereotypes. Possible themes for my ideas could be the union jack, gloomy weather, busy cities, the food we eat, and our love for tea. Artists I could look at who specialise in these themes are: Gerald Tonti- an American artist who used hot drinks such as tea and coffee to create stunning portraits. Helaina sharply- a wirework artist who also specialises on the theme of tea and teacups, wirework isn’t a media I'm very experienced in but I really like her designs and it would be interesting for me to give wirework a try. Mr Brainwash- Mr Brainwash is a graffiti artist who has based a lot of his work on Britain and British stereotypes. Pete Rumney- is an artist who has themed a lot of his expressive paintings on British rain and bad weather. Joel Penkman- Joel Penkman is an artist who works in coloured pencils and specialises in drawing very traditional British food and drink making his work very nostalgic.

Charlene Mullen- a ceramics artist who specialises in the London skyline. Linley wood- an interior designer whose designs are themed around London landmarks. Inga Wilmink- a surface pattern designer whose designs are based on british culture and London.

samples What I will be sampling What I may be sampling What I will not be sampling Surface pattern designs Fashion illustration Acrylic paint Illustration using hot drinks such as tea or coffee inspired by Gerald Tonti Printing surface pattern designs onto fabrics and papers Watercolour Pen and ink illustrations for surface pattern designs Fashion design Sticky tape transfers Printing my illustrations/ surface pattern designs onto mugs or plates in the style of Charlene Mullen Emulsion transfers Photography to give me more inspiration from my themes Wirework inspired by Helaina sharply Coloured pencil sketches in the style of Joel Penkman

Design development Possible outcomes for this project are: A variety of teacups of plates with my illustrations or surface pattern designs based on British culture A collection of photographs taken by me based on British culture and identity clustered together to form the union jack flag. A series of illustrations of British landmarks which could then be printed onto fabric and used for interior or fashion designs. A short film showing Britain in a day which would contradict outsiders stereotypes of Britain.

Time scale The first thing I will be doing is making three mind maps, one on techniques and processes, one on British values and British identity, and one on some initial ideas to interpret the theme. Next I will do lots of research into my themes and look at different artists and how they work. I will then update my initial ideas after all of my testing, at this point I should have much clearer idea for my final outcome. Next I will develop two of these initial ideas t see if I could improve them further. Along with this I will make lots of samples and research further to try push myself to make something that I'm really proud of. Then I will decide on which idea I will use for my final piece using my developed idea and testing as a guide. Finally I will make an evaluation on how I think the project went and what I would do differently in future projects.
