1 Year 9 Art Coursework Summer h/work
Complete an interesting mind map in your sketch book based on your chosen project theme. Add 20+ ‘trigger images’ and research information in your book based on what you have put on your mind map, to show ideas, inspiration and knowledge. Put them with or just after your mind map. Extension task: Complete 2 detailed drawings on one page of ‘real life’ things that relate to your area of interest for your project (strongly recommended, as these will increase project mark easily).

2 Major Coursework project: 60% of GCSE grade
Starting themes for major coursework project: Form Structure and assembly Transformation/distortion Identity, culture and expression This will be a long project which takes all of Year 10, pick something you want to research generally, not just based on a single idea. It counts towards 60% of your GCSE grade

3 Art mind maps are a starting point for project ideas and need to show lots of ideas and imaginative thought about the topic….let your mind run….. Images can be added as ‘triggers’ too on the same page or on the next pages to show visual inspiration from culture, reference or artists. Although a creative presentation of your mind map is good, a good range of ideas and expansion on the initial ideas is more important.

4 Making a project theme mind map
From a project title in the middle, create lots of branches that each represent a single word or sentence that relates to the main theme What does the theme make you think of; issues, ideas, concepts, meanings, word definitions, events, objects, places etc…? Think of things to do with your topic that you find interesting, eye-catching, challenging, unusual, inspirational. What could you draw? Then, create sub-branches that stem from the main branches to further expand on ideas and concepts that you are interested in Expand with more ideas and details on the idea. Including images, sketches and using different colours can also be helpful in mindmapping and creating the sub-branch topics. What photographs could you take? What would be visually interesting?

5 Trigger pages research: inspiration for ideas
WILF: Information: find interesting: news articles, personal accounts, historical information and sources Facts/ scientific information, information on different cultures/artists to add to your knowledge of your topic. Images: Use key words or ideas you have based on your knowledge to search on Google image for images that could visually express what you explored on your mind map about your topic. Think about emotions and symbolic meaning/ metaphors as well as the obvious. Artists’ work: Use Pinterest search, my boards and teacher suggestions to find Artists’ whose work could inspire how you make your own work in this project. It could be their concept or technique that you like. It does not have to be exactly the same imagery or theme to inspire you. Aim: To use the internet as a research tool to find: Information: relating to your topic that increases your knowledge of cultural, historical, social or scientific aspects. Images: that you think relate to or represent things mentioned on your mindmap. Artists’ work: that could inspire how you create work for your topic. Copy and paste all the relevant images and information onto a word doc so you can print it all out.
