Trick or Treaty…Again After The War of 1812 British Canada and The United States BOTH limited their Naval Presence in the Great Lakes and shared Fishing Rights under the Rush-Bagot Agreement In a Separate Treaty, the Convention of 1818, the United States Gained: Fishing Rights off the Coast of Canada The Border with Canada was set at the 49 N Parallel north and The Western border to the Rocky Mountains Both Countries Would Occupy the Pacific Northwest Together For its Valuable Fur Trade

The First Step Towards Disney World Spain became a problem in southern Florida and John Quincy Adams was sent to Florida to discuss settlement by the United States Andrew Jackson was sent to Secure the Border of Florida but invaded Florida to defeat the Seminoles Jackson would take over Spanish Military Forts, over threw the Florida Governor and claimed Florida for the United States After the Invasion The Adams-Onis Treaty caused Spain to turn over control of Florida to the United States and Also gave up their Claims in Oregon while Spain gained more of Texas

Always a NEW problem to deal with While Spain was losing Land in the United States, Many of their colonies in the Americas started to declare independence President Monroe began to worry that these newly independent countries would be taken over by other European Powers Monroe was also concerned about the increased Russian Presence in The Pacific Northwest

Is there a Doctrine in the House? Monroe did not want to be involved in any European wars for colonies, but stated that the United States supported the Independence movement in the Americas Britain Also supported the Independence movement of Latin America and wanted to protect their new trade relationships President Monroe would issue the Monroe Doctrine making the United States the protectors of the Americas

The Monroe Doctrine The Monroe Doctrine stated that: The United States would stay our of European Affairs The United States would recognize and not interfere with existing European Colonies The Western Hemisphere was off limits to future colonization Any Attempt of colonization by Europe would be a hostile act and could lead to war

Welcome to the world of being a Top Power The Monroe Doctrine would be Strongly criticized by European Nations BUT not challenged The United States continues to be a Protector of the Americas and a Top World Power While trying to LARGLY avoid involvement, the united states has had to intervene in the region
