Appointments with counselors Students – Stop by the Counselor’s Corner located in the cafeteria during lunch or by student services after school to complete a REFERRAL SLIP. Parents – Need an appointment – Emailing the counselor is the preferred method of contact. It is our goal to reply or return email, voice messages, and referrals within a weeks time. However, there are times that the amount of emails and voice messages increase. If a return call/reply has not been made within a week, please contact the front office to leave a written message.

What I need to know for next year… Promotion Requirements Concentration Concentration – Four elective credits which must be in the same area of concentration from a CTE concentration or a subject based concentration. 2016-2017 Course Selection Guide The Onslow County High School Course Selection Guide is a comprehensive document profiling the individual programs and courses of study at all seven of Onslow County’s high schools. It is an effort to provide students, parents, and school professionals with an instrument to assist students in the selection of courses for grades 9 through 12. testing Sophomores: Juniors: PLAN - The PLAN exam, sometimes called the “Pre-ACT,” is a standardized test to help students gauge their performance on the ACT. Most students take PLAN in order to practice for the real ACT. Additional benefits include completing a career interest survey and receiving pertinent college and scholarship information from the makers of the ACT. Juniors: ACT – The ACT is a North Carolina mandated test taken during their spring semester. NC provides one test per student. Any additional ACT test can be scheduled and paid for online at act.org. The ACT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. The ACT has four sections: English, Reading, Math and Science, as well as a 40-minute writing test. SAT – We suggest students take the SAT twice: Junior year – spring semester; Senior year – fall semester. Students can register and pay online at collegeboard.org.

How can I get help for Sat/act registration fees?... Qualifying Free and/or Reduced Lunch AVID Benefits: 2 SAT/ACT Fee Waivers (8 Score Reports) 4 College Application Fee Waivers NCAA Clearing House Fee Waiver Student must meet with Mrs. Young Application must be renewed each year with the County Office.

Tips for parents and students Get signed up and check Parent Portal frequently (requires a copy of your current photo ID) Communicate with teachers If your students is struggling in class: The policy is to contact and work with the teachers. We are not able to change classes or teachers. Take advantage of Viking Valor every other week. Arrange for tutoring with teachers before and/or after school It is not too early to begin visiting colleges or schools through their Admissions Office. Visit NCAA Clearing House website - ncaa.org for requirements. WOHS will hold an annual meeting each fall. Utilize cfnc.org. SAT Hours – visit our website for requirements to qualify for SAT scholarships National Honors Society (NHS) – visit our website for requirements to qualify for NHS your junior and/or senior year.
