CCA Hawai‘i Summit UH Transfer Data Donald O. Straney, Ph.D. Vice President for Academic Planning and Policy September 28, 2017

Undergraduate enrollment is down at UHM and UHH, and growth is slowing at UHWO We are all aware of the declining enrollments in the last several years. West Oahu has continued to see increases but at much lower rates of growth.

Transfers are a large share of new entrants to UH 4-years Students Starting at a UH 4-year¹ and Transfers² Fa16/Sp17 Looking at enrollment of new entrants over both fall and spring, we can see that transfer students are more than half of new enrollments at all 4 year campuses. For West Oahu is it 75%. Native students on this chart are first time students at the 4 year campuses. Note: Enrollment of transfer students tend to be large in Spring while enrollment for First time students relatively small. So the combined fall and spring looks different from just fall. ¹ Students entering as first time freshmen; excludes unclassified students. ² UHCC transfers are students who were home-based at a UHCC anytime prior to transferring. Transfers include classified and unclassified students.

Only two campuses met performance-based funding goals for transfer Only WO and LEE met transfer goals

73% of UHCC classified first-time freshmen intended to transfer to a 4-year institution Average of Fall 2014-15 ¹Indicated Interest in Transfer 73% Based on the student record update form that the students are required to fill in every semester, 73% of newly entering students into the CC’s ultimately want to earn a 4 year degree. Source: Student Record Update form

But, among the 2014 group, only 8% transferred to a UH 4-year and 3% transferred to a non-UH 4-year within 3 years ¹Indicated Interest in Transfer 73% But after 3 years, on 8% actually transferred to a UH 4 year and another 3% to a non-UH 4 year. This is a large group of students that we need to improve our efforts to help them achieve their goals. Source: Student Record Update form

UHCC transfers to UH 4-years are flat while transfer to other 4-years increased In the past fall 2016 and spring 2017, the growth of UHCC transfers to non UH 4 years increased. At the same time, transfer to UH four years remained flat. ¹ Unduplicated counts. UHCC transfers are students who were home-based at a UHCC anytime prior to transferring. Transfers include unclassified and classified students.

UHCC Transfer Out to Non-UH Institutions Top Non-UH Institutions for UHCC Transfers, AY 2014-15 to AY 2016-17 Institution State Total Hawai‘i Pacific University HI 489 Chaminade University of Honolulu 466 University of Phoenix² AZ 387 University of Nevada Las Vegas NV 193 College of Southern Nevada² 152 Arizona State University² 117 American Public University System² WV 107 University Of Maryland - University College² MD 92 Northern Arizona University² 71 Grand Canyon University-Traditional² Top Majors of UHCC Transfers Attending Non-UH Institutions, AY 2014-15 to AY 2016-17¹ Major Total Registered Nursing/Registered Nurse 426 Business Administration and Management, General 343 General Studies 283 Psychology, General 224 Pre-Nursing Studies 177 Biology/Biological Sciences, General 155 Liberal Arts and Sciences/Liberal Studies 140 Business/Commerce, General 88 Liberal Arts and Sciences, General Studies and Humanities, Other 83 Accounting 62 Most of the transfer are to campuses in Hawaii and also to those that specialize in distance education. The majors are Nursing, Business and other majors that are available at our campuses. ¹ Based on available major data from the National Student Clearinghouse ² Primarily online Source: National Student Clearinghouse

UHCC transfers¹ have high first year retention rates compared to students starting at a UH 4-year² First Year Fall-to-Fall Retention Rates UH Mānoa Starting at UHM Transfer UHCC Transfer Non-UHCC UH Hilo Transfer UHCC Starting at UHH Transfer Non-UHCC UH West O‘ahu There seems to be a prevailing notion that UH CC transfer students do not do well but their first year retention rates are comparable if not higher than those of native students. Non UH CC transfer students have much lower retention rates and may be the reason that transfer students are perceived as not doing well. Transfer UHCC Starting at WO Transfer Non-UHCC ¹ UHCC transfers are students who were home-based at a UHCC anytime prior to transferring. For this slide, transfers exclude unclassified students. ² Students entering as first time freshmen, excludes unclassified students.

UHCC transfer students have better graduation rates Graduation Rates, Fall 2010 Cohort – Full-Time Students¹   2YR 4YR 6YR UH Mānoa First-Time Freshmen 24.7% 58.2% UHCC Transfer 24.4% 63.8% Non-UHCC Transfer 11.5% 49.7% UH Hilo 11.0% 34.9% 22.9% 51.4% 13.6% 37.6% UH West O‘ahu 0.0% 13.8% 27.1% 61.2% 39.4% 66.7% 2 year grad rates for UH CC transfer students are also very comparable to 4 year grad rates for Native students. Similarly 4 year grad rates for UH CC transfer students are comparable if not better than 6 year grad rates for Native Students. Here again, we see that grad rates for non UH CC transfer students are lagging. ¹ Excludes unclassified students.

UHCC transfers exceed 60 credits at entry Average Credits at Transfer into 4-Years1 UH Mānoa Transfer UHCC Transfer Non-UHCC UH Hilo Transfer UHCC Transfer Non-UHCC UH West O‘ahu UHCC transfer students come into the 4 year campuses with more credits than the non UH CC transfer studetns. 68 credits at Manoa, 66 at Hilo and 78.5 at West Oahu. Transfer UHCC Transfer Non-UHCC ¹ Reflects only credits that transferred to 4-year campuses. Transfers include classified and unclassified students.

Transfer students¹ graduate with 10-20 more credits than students starting at a UH 4-year² Average Credit Hours³ at Graduation UH Mānoa Transfer UHCC Transfer Non-UHCC Starting at UHM UH Hilo Transfer Non-UHCC Transfer UHCC Starting at UHH UH West O‘ahu They graduate on average with a similar number of credits more than native students, approximately 10 more at Manoa and Hilo, and about 20 more at West Oahu. Transfer Non-UHCC Transfer UHCC Starting at WO ¹ Excludes unclassified and second bachelor students. ² UHCC transfers are students who were home-based at a UHCC anytime prior to transferring. Transfers include unclassified and classified students. ³ All Completed SH

On average, UHCC transfers take less than 3 years to graduate after transfer Students Starting at a UH 4-year¹ and Transfers² Average Time to Degree UH Mānoa Starting at UHM Transfer Non-UHCC Transfer UHCC UH Hilo Starting at UHH Transfer Non-UHCC Transfer UHCC UH West O‘ahu Their time to degree on average is about 2 and a half years. Including their time at the UHCC, they take about a semester more than native students to graduate. Starting at WO Transfer Non-UHCC Transfer UHCC ¹ Students entering as first time freshmen, excludes unclassified students. ² For transfers, TTD is starting from the most recent entry to the 4-year campus. Excludes second bachelors, includes classified and unclassified students.

Summary Transfers are a critical enrollment component At our 4-years, transfers comprise a larger population than those who started at the 4-years UHCC transfers make up a large portion of new entrants – more than a quarter at Mānoa and Hilo and more than half at West O‘ahu UHCC students plan to transfer, but few actually do (in 3 years) Of those who transfer, an increasing number go elsewhere

Summary (cont’d) Compared to first-time students, UHCC transfers: Have higher retention and graduation rates, in general Graduate with more excess credits Take about one semester longer to graduate
