1 Selected Results of President’s Office Survey of Alumni Graduating in 1997/98 The Office of Institutional Research and Policy Studies July 15, 2003 Jennifer A. Brown, Director

2 2 Background All four UMass undergraduate institutions participated Data collected and processed by Student Assessment Research & Evaluation Office at UMass Amherst Boston had 193 responses, the highest number of responses among UMass campuses The response rate was low – about 36%

3 3 Characteristics of respondents 66% were women 20% spoke a language other than English at home 64% reported neither parent had a Bachelor’s degree 69% entered UMB as a transfer student

4 4 Assessment of UMB 90% said they would attend UMB again if they could relive their college experience (but only 48% would definitely do so) 96% would recommend UMB to a friend or family member (and 72% would definitely do so)

5 5 Comparison with UMass campuses Yes, if I could relive my college experience, I would definitely chose to attend the campus again

6 6 Comparison with UMass campuses Yes, definitely would recommend campus to a friend or family member

7 7 Assessment of Academic Quality 97% were satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of education they received at UMB 97% were satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of their major 91% were satisfied or very satisfied with the way UMB prepared them for further education

8 8 Participation in Education 25% responded that they had completed a degree program since graduation from UMB –75% of the completed degrees were at the Master’s Level 19% were enrolled in a degree program 55% planned to enroll in a degree program in the future

9 9 Assessment of Preparation for Work 87% were satisfied or very satisfied with the way UMB prepared them for their current or most recent job 83% of those working said that they were satisfied or very satisfied with their career to date. 75% said that UMB had a major or moderate impact on their ability to acquire job or work-related knowledge and skills

10 10 Comparison with UMass Campuses % reporting that campus had a ‘major impact’ on ability to acquire job or work related knowledge and skills

11 11 Employment & Earnings 69% reported working full time 14% were working part time Chart at right shows reported annual earnings from all jobs held

13 13 Summary Overall respondents were satisfied with their experiences at UMB Over 72% would definitely recommend UMB to a friend or family member Under half (48%) would definitely attend again if they could relive the college experience Alumni were well satisfied with academic quality Response rate was low, so care must be taken in generalizing the results
