Rett Syndrome and Recess What is Rett Syndrome? Rett Syndrome is defined as a rare genetic neurological and developmental disorder that affects the way the brain develops. This syndrome occurs almost exclusively in females. What causes Rett Syndrome? The genetic mutation that causes the disease occurs randomly, usually on the MECP2 gene. When was it discovered? It was discovered in 1954 by Dr. Andreas Rett of Vienna, Austria. Characteristics of Rett Syndrome: Typical development for the first 6 months The sudden loss of ability to walk, crawl, talk, communicate, or use their hands Seizures Breathing problems Poor circulation Rapid speech and coordination loss Services Often Needed: Occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language therapy, behavioral specialist, special education, and adapted physical education Challenges with Recess: People with Rett Syndrome often have muscle and joint problems along with anxiety problems which can take away from their social function.
