Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 5–1) Main Idea Example 1: Problem-Solving Strategy Lesson Menu

I will solve problems by solving a simpler problem. Main Idea/Vocabulary

Emilio is one of two bakers for Brian’s Bakery Emilio is one of two bakers for Brian’s Bakery. Working separately, the two bakers can make a total of 2 cakes in 2 hours. The bakery wants to hire an additional 2 bakers for a large cake order. At this rate, how many cakes can 4 bakers make in 6 hours if they work separately? Example 1

Understand What facts do you know? 2 bakers can make 2 cakes in 2 hours. What do you need to find? How many cakes 4 bakers can make in 6 hours. Example 1

Plan You can solve the problem by solving a simpler problem. Example 1

Solve Step 1 Find how long it takes each baker to make 1 cake. 2 ÷ 2 = 1 Each baker makes 1 cake in 2 hours. Step 2 Find how many cakes each baker can make in 6 hours. Divide by 2 since it takes 2 hours to make one cake. 6 ÷ 2 = 3 Each baker can make 3 cakes in 6 hours. Example 1

Solve Step 3 Find how many cakes 4 bakers can make in 6 hours. 4 × 3 = 12 Answer: So, 4 bakers can make 12 cakes in 6 hours. Example 1

Check Look back at the problem. The number of bakers doubled, so 2 × 2 or 4 cakes can be made in 2 hours. In 6 hours, the bakers can make 3 × 4 or 12 cakes. So the answer is correct. Example 1
