Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 9–5) Main Idea Example 1:Problem-Solving Strategy

Main Idea/Vocabulary I will solve problems by looking for a pattern.

Example 1 Shawna is training to run in a half-marathon. A half-marathon is about 13 miles. On her first day of training, she ran 1.25 miles. Then she increased her distance each day according to a pattern. Here are the numbers of miles Shawna ran the first five days of training. 1.25, 1.85, 2.45, 3.05, 3.65 Based on her pattern, how many miles will Shawna run on her sixth day?

Example 1 Understand What facts do you know? We know how many miles Shawna ran each day for five days. She increased the distance she ran each day according to a pattern. What do you need to find? The number of miles Shawna will run on the sixth day.

Example 1 Plan One way to solve the problem is by looking for a pattern among the number of miles she ran each day for five days. Then extend the pattern to find the number of miles she will run on the sixth day.

Example 1 Solve Use your plan to solve the problem. Find the amounts by which Shawna increased her distances. 1.25 1.85 2.45 3.05 3.65

Example 1 Solve Shawna increases her distance by 0.6 mile each day. Add 0.6 to 3.65 to find the number of miles Shawna will run on the sixth day. 3.65 + 0.6 = 4.25 Answer: So, on the sixth day, she will run 4.25 miles.

Example 1 Check Look back at the problem by subtracting. 4.25 – 0.6 = 3.65. So, the answer is correct.
