2 Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 15–2) Main Idea
Example 1: Problem-Solving Strategy Lesson Menu

3 I will solve problems by making an organized list.
Main Idea/Vocabulary

4 Edgar saw the following items at a store: a batting glove for $8
Edgar saw the following items at a store: a batting glove for $8.95, inline skates for $39.75, weights for $5.50 each, and a can of tennis balls for $2.75. Which items can Edgar buy and spend about $15? Example 1

5 Understand What facts do you know?
The cost of the items and that Edgar has $15 to spend. What do you need to find? You need to find which items Edgar can buy that cost about $15 total. Example 1

6 Plan One way to solve the problem is by making an organized list.
Example 1

7 Solve Since the inline skates cost more than $15, you can eliminate the inline skates as an option. Round the costs of the other items to the nearest dollar. Batting glove: $8.95 ≈ $9 Weights: $5.50 ≈ $6 Can of tennis balls: $2.75 ≈ $3 Example 1

8 Solve Start with the batting glove:
1 glove + 1 weight ≈ $9 + $6, or $15 1 glove + 2 cans of tennis balls ≈ $9 + $6, or $15 List other combinations that contain the weights: 2 weights + 1 can of tennis balls ≈ $12 + $3, or $15 1 weight + 3 cans of tennis balls ≈ $6 + $9, or $15 Example 1

9 Solve List any remaining combinations that contain the tennis balls:
5 cans of tennis balls ≈ $15 Example 1

10 Check Check the list to be sure that all of the possible combinations of sporting good items that total no more than $15 are included. Example 1
