Food, Beverage and Accommodation

HOTELS From the French word “hὂtel” which means host. Profit-oriented business that offers guest rooms, business facilities and other services. Building, edifice or premises, or a completely independent part thereof, which is used for regular reception, accommodation of travelers and provision of services incidental thereto for a fee.

HOTEL RATING SYSTEM STARS DIAMOND Basic room that provides expanded amenities and services. Provides full service and amenities, w/c may include turndown service, bell service a gym and on-site food and beverage outlets. Provides guests luxurious experiences. Moderately priced booking with modest enhancements. Provides comprehensive needs of guest. Provides extensive amenities, stylish facilities and high degree of service.

Provides superlative service and expanded amenities in a luxurious, distinctive environment Some sector in the hotel industry claim that six-or seven-star classification is just a marketing tool by hotels to promote their properties Provides ultimate luxury and sophistication Not applicable

Accommodation Types Accommodation is not exclusive to a hotel. It can be categorized into different types based on preference, location, services offered and built. The following are the different types of accommodation that cater to travelers in all parts of the globe:

Guest House a guest house is an independent building that normally has at least 4 letting bedrooms, some with private facilities. This house is operated for commercial business. Breakfast is available and evening meals may be provided

B&B (Homestay) a private house offered as an accommodation when serving bed and breakfast. B&Bs usually accommodate guest of not more than 6. Dinner may be served upon guest’s request.

Small Hotel A small hotel offers a minimum of 6 letting bedrooms and a maximum of 20. Most bedrooms have private facilities. Small hotels serve breakfast, dinner and normally, lunch, and offer drinks. Small hotels usually run by the owner(s) and reflect their own personal style.

Hotel a hotel normally has at least 20 letting bedrooms with private facilities. They serve breakfast, dinner and, normally, lunch.

International Resort Hotel a hotel with a range of leisure and sporting facilities. These may include an 18-hole golf course, swimming pool, leisure center, and country pursuits.

Serviced Apartment self-catering apartments where services such as cleaning are available. Meals and drinks may be also be available, either to each apartment, or in a restaurant and/or bar on site.

Lodge overnight accommodation, usually purpose-built and situated close to a major road or city center. Reception hours may be restricted and payment may be required upon check-in. There may be associated restaurant facilities.

Inn bed and breakfast accommodation within a traditional inn or pub. The bar-restaurant is open to non-residents, and provides food at lunchtime and in the evening.

Restaurant with Rooms The restaurant is the most significant part of the business, and is usually open to non-residents as well as those staying in the establishment. Breakfast is usually provided.

Campus Accommodation this accommodation provided by colleges and universities for their students is often made available – with meals – to individuals or groups at certain times of year, typically during summer, Easter, and Christmas holiday

Hostel a building run by a private operator or a non-profit membership organization where beds and, sometimes, meals and other services and facilities are provided.

Holiday Park, Touring Park and Camping Grounds a park that offers holiday homes and touring and camping pitches.

Guest Rooms Guest rooms in the hotel vary in size, classification, and amenities. The following are the common hotel guest room types according to size:

Single Rooms A room designed for a single traveler. Some establishments assign only a single bed to single rooms. A single bed is a that only one person can comfortably sleep in.

Double Rooms A room with two double beds. Double bed size is usually 54 in X 75 in (4’6 x 6’3) or 137 cm x 191 cm.

Twin Rooms A room with two single beds. Single bed size is usually 39 in x 75 in (3’3 x 6’3) or 97 cm x 191 cm.

Suite Rooms A complete room usually with a foyer that connects to one or more bedrooms. Usually, these are the most expensive rooms in the hotel. Suites are of different categories as well.

Types of Accommodation According to Service Standard (std) – it is usually the most basic type of room offered by the hotel. Moderate (mod) – a type of room slightly better than a standard room. Superior (sup) – generally, a room of this type should provide superior size and furnishings compared to those of a standard room.

Deluxe (dlx) – these rooms are supposed to provide accommodations in luxurious style including view, location, furnishings, and size. Run of House (roh) – this means that the room offered to guests is standard type or better depending on what is available during the time of the guest’s check-in. Junior Suite (jrste) – a “junior” suite is a larger room with separate seating area or sala from the actual bed area,

Suite (ste) – a large room that opens to a separate area for sofa or reception are and a bedroom that is separated by a door from the sofa. Studio (stu) – a room designed similar to a junior suite but with an added space for a “kitchenette,” or cooking facilities.

Size of Beds King (K) – the biggest bed size among all sizes. A king-sized bed usually measures 72” wide x 72” long.

California King (CK) – a kind of king-sized bed that is longer than its width. 72” wide x 78” long.

Queen (Q) – a bed that measures 60” in width and 72” in length.

Double (D) – a bed that is 54” wide and 72” long.

Twin (T) – a twin bed consists of two single beds Twin (T) – a twin bed consists of two single beds. The dimension is the same as the of the single bed. Size is 36” wide x 72” long. The bed can also be narrower as 32” in width.

Types of Room According to Views Partial Ocean View (pov) – This room provides only partial view of the ocean. The room may either be partially blocked or it faces a different direction other than the ocean. View of the ocean is limited.

Ocean View (ov) – the guest has a full view down the beach and can see the ocean but the room doesn’t face the ocean.

Ocean Front (of) – the room gives a hotel guest a full ocean view.

Beach Front (bf) – it is a hotel room that has direct access to the beach.

City View (ctv, cvw, or cty) – it is a room with a view of the cityspace.

Mountain View (mvw, mtv) – the room view is towards a mountain landscape.

Water view (wvw, wtv) – the room has an inside view of a body of water.

Island View (isv, ivw, isl) – a euphemism-used in both Hawaii and the Caribbean – for a room with no ocean view at all.
